Martin Parker Earns CAA Weekly Honor, Added To Final Buchanan Award Ballot

Nov. 23, 2009
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond junior DT Martin Parker was named the CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, after helping the Spiders shutdown William & Mary in Saturday's 119th meeting of long-time rivals. It marks Parker's first career CAA weekly honor.
The CAA honor coincided with Parker's name being added to the final ballot for the 2009 Buck Buchanan Award, which is presented annually to the best defensive player in the FCS.
A New Haven, Conn. native, Parker collected six tackles, had one of the two Richmond sacks and had W&M QB R.J. Archer on the run all afternoon as the Spiders' limited the Tribe's offense to their lowest point total since a 44-3 loss at Virginia Tech in 2007.
Parker accounted for three of the Spiders seven QB hurries, which forced Archer into quick throws and his first sub-50 percent completion percentage of the season (17-of-36) and his first two-interception game.
The junior leads the team with 6.5 sacks ranks third in CAA Football with his 15.0 tackles for loss. He has helped lead a Richmond defense that ranks third nationally in rushing and eighth in scoring.
Parker had a season-high 12 tackles against VMI and forced a game-deciding fumble in a 21-17 win over James Madison as the Dukes were driving for a potential winning TD.
Richmond (10-1), which won a share of the 2009 CAA Football Championship with Villanova and is the defending National Champion, received a No. 4-seed in the NCAA Division I Playoffs and will host Elon (9-2) Saturday at UR Stadium at 1 p.m.
