Richmond Football Adds Stacy Tutt, Chris Stewart To Staff

Feb. 3, 2009
RICHMOND - University of Richmond head football coach Mike London has announced the addition of two new members of his staff - assistant coach Stacy Tutt and director of strength and conditioning Chris Stewart. Tutt played quarterback for the Spiders and two years in the NFL as a fullback, while Stewart has been on the University of Tennessee staff for the last 11 years.
A native of Tappahannock, Va., Tutt returns home to Richmond after a brief stint in the NFL with the New York Jets. A quarterback in college, Tutt was signed as a rookie free agent by the Jets following the completion of his criminal justice degree in 2006 and spent two years with the club as a fullback.
"We are very excited to have Stacy join our staff," said London. "He was an accomplished player at Richmond, he has a NFL experience and he's a role model our players can look up to. I'm honored to now have four generations of Richmond alums on our coaching staff."
Tutt was one of the most explosive players in school history, leading the Spiders to the 2005 Atlantic 10 Championship and the NCAA Quarterfinals. The dual-threat QB stands third all-time in career total offense (6,872 yards), fourth all-time in passing yards (5,318), fourth in career rushing TDs (24) and fifth in career passing TDs (36). His 376 passing yards versus Hofstra in 2005 stand as the second-best single-game performance in school history.
With Tutt on board, Richmond's National Championship football program now has four alumni on the staff - London '83, Tutt '05, assistant head coach Jeff Hanson '72 and assistant coach Scott Burton '95.
His position has yet to be determined.
Chris Stewart comes to Richmond after 11 years on the University of Tennessee staff, including the last five as associate strength and conditioning coach.
"Chris is very knowledgeable and has an impressive track record of training elite college athletes," said London. "He is well respected by his peers and the athletes he trains. Our entire athletic department will benefit from his football background as well as his extensive training in Olympic sports."
Stewart assisted with the UT football program, while serving as the primary strength coach for the Vols' nationally-acclaimed track & field team. He served as director for the annual UT Strength and Conditioning Clinic and worked year-round with former Vols in the professional or Olympic ranks.
Stewart earned a sport management/exercise science degree from Western Carolina in 1998 and completed his master's from UT in 2001. He is certified through the College Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association.
Stewart is married to the former Sherry Briggs of Fayetteville, N.C., and the couple has a son, Cole, and a daughter, Lily.
The final position on London's staff is expected to be filled in the next two weeks.
