Spiders To Honor Hall Of Fame Football Coach With Helmet Sticker

Sept. 4, 2009
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond Football Team will honor former head coach Frank Jones with a commemorative sticker on its helmets during the 2009 season. Jones, who led the Spiders to a Tangerine Bowl win in 1968, passed away of a stroke in late July. He was 90.
The sticker is white, with a block "FJ" in red outlined in blue. It will be worn on the back of the Spiders' helmets.
"Coach Jones was a guy who really put Richmond football on the map," said head coach Mike London. "We hope that whatever happens this season, we will represent some of the things he did while he was here."
Jones coached Richmond from 1966-73 and three times was named Southern Conference coach of the year. He guided the Spiders to their only two bowl appearances in school history, winning the Tangerine Bowl in 1968 over Ohio University, 49-42 -- a win that stands among the greatest ever at Richmond.
The Spiders' National Championship season in 2008 marked the 40th anniversary of the Tangerine Bowl win.
The UR Athletic Hall of Fame inducted Mr. Jones in 1989. Mr. Jones became president of Frank Jones and Company Real Estate, based in Richmond, following his departure from UR. He remained a loyal Spiders fan and was periodically asked to speak to UR football teams by Richmond's subsequent coaches.
The second-ranked Spiders open the 2009 season Saturday at Duke.
