The Game
In a match-up of the last two National Champions, No. 14 Richmond heads to No. 5 Villanova for a crucial CAA Football game on the Main Line Saturday afternoon.
Richmond has been one of the best FCS road teams over the past three seasons, winning 19 times in 23 FCS games away from home since the start of 2007. But the Spiders are winless in their last three trips to Villanova Stadium.
Villanova has won the last two meetings in the series by a combined seven points.
Saturday's game marks the fourth time in the last six years that the previous two National Champions will meet.
Quick Slants
The Spiders are ranked in the Sports Network/Fathead.com Top 25 for the 48th-straight poll.
Richmond leads CAA Football in Red Zone offense (ranked fourth in the FCS) -- scoring points in 18 of 19 trips (94.7%), including 13 touchdowns.
Rekindling the magic that earned it the nickname "Stonewall," the defense has allowed just 284.0 total yards over the last four games (3-1) after giving up 452.0 in the previous three (1-2). The defense has allowed just five offensive scores, with eight takeaways and nine sacks in the last three games.
Senior CB Justin Rogers (pictured), regarded as one of the most versatile and explosive players in the FCS, is a three-time All-America and a nominee for the Buck Buchanan Award. He has 12 career INTs, 6 career return TDs, and currently leads the CAA and is No. 4 in the NCAA in punt return yards (17.8).
Rogers needs 35 more KO return yards for the CAA career mark (Villanova's Brian Westbrook).
Senior LB Eric McBride is the CAA's third-leading tackler (10.6/game). The local standout, who owns the longest active streak of consecutive starts in CAA Football (50), stands fifth on Richmond's career tackles list (401) -- he needs 29 more for second place.
Senior DL Martin Parker is tops among defensive linemen at 8.7 tackles/game and ranks third in the CAA in tackles for loss (8.0 total).
Richmond has an NCAA-leading 3 players on the "watch list" for the Buck Buchanan Award (FCS top defensive player) -- Parker, Rogers and McBride.
Sophomore FB Kendall Gaskins is coming off a 100-yard game versus Towson. Of the 102 touches in his career, 41% result in First Down or TD.
Sophomore K Wil Kamin is the CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week and is one of just two FCS kickers to make all FGs this season (min. 5 attempts).
Injuries have plagued Richmond all season, and the Spiders played Towson without 10 regulars.
