Richmond head coach Latrell Scott
Opening statement:
"Another typical Richmond-JMU game. Since 2004, this game has come down to a touchdown or less, with the exception of one game. The home team hasn't won in a long time. Fortunately, we were on the winning end of the game today. You have to credit our seniors today. You have to credit Coach Matthews and his kids for playing hard. I'm even more proud of our guys and their effort that they gave today. Our guys don't quit. They're resilient. I wouldn't trade these guys for anything. I try to tell them every chance I get."
Evaluate QB John Laub's play:
"John's a little rusty. But he gave us the ability to do some things we haven't been able to do for a couple games now. He made some big throws out there today. He forced a couple of throws, but that's just him trying to make some plays. We talked to him all week about not trying to win the game, just manage the game. We're appreciative that's he's back. That was a great effort today."
The accuracy of Wil Kamin:
"Wil's a different bird. Have you ever seen a kicker ice himself? [Laughs]. We have total confidence in Wil. He has a swagger that a lot of guys don't have. Wil is a real football player. This team is proud and appreciative of him. Wil embodies the fight this team has."
Richmond's defensive series in overtime:
"Another great stand by our defense. We want them to go out and make a play. And they did. Martin Parker, Eric McBride and Tyler Sullivan all made plays. You look at them as fifth-year seniors and that's what we expect from those guys because that's what they give us."
Senior CB Justin Rogers
First-ever career pass:
"It was a reverse pass. We've been practicing [the play] the last couple of weeks. I never thought we would run it. They put me in to throw the ball. It was designed to get a touchdown. [Laughs]. But it got us to the one-yard line. Being a quarterback in high school, it was something I had been waiting for."
Senior LB Patrick Weldon
Making the adjustment on defense in second half:
"We weren't hitting our gaps as hard as we had been in the past. That was the biggest adjustment our coaches were making on the sidelines. Our biggest adjustment was flying down field and pushing off the line of scrimmage."
Senior LB Tyler Sullivan
On his 14-yard sack in overtime:
"Coach always harps on never quitting, he always tells us to keep fighting. I fought until the end. It was one of those plays where you have to keep on fighting. It's JMU-Richmond, I knew the game was going to come down to a play like that."
Playing a senior, what this game means:
"Some of the fifth-years and I have been talking that this is the last JMU-Richmond game we'll play. We just wanted to keep on fighting. If we keep on fighting, we knew we were going to win."
Sophomore K Wil Kamin
Celebratory run after the game-winning field goal:
"I was really just running away from the team. I'm claustrophobic. I didn't want to get on the bottom of one of those piles."
Thought process before the kick:
"It was just another kick. It was like any other day in practice. I was ready for the kick. Luckily, they got me close. That field goal wouldn't have made much further than 21 yards."
Sophomore QB John Laub
Thoughts about returning:
"All week, Coach Scott had told me to manage the game and protect the ball. I forced some throws but I just tried to manage the game as best as possible. We kept on fighting. At the end there, we gave Wil an opportunity to win the game. It felt really good [to return]. I've been waiting to get cleared for the past couple of weeks. When they gave me the go, I was really excited."
James Madison head coach Mickey Matthews
What didn't work for the Dukes in overtime:
"We ran the zone on first down, didn't make anything. We ran a quarterback power on the second down then got tagged with a 40 yard loss, what game did you see?"
Evaluate Drew Dudzik's play:
"We didn't play very good on offense."
The good play of JMU defense:
"We got some turnovers. The game came down to that one holding call at the end. The call was bigger than big. That one call decided the game. I don't know if I've seen that in my 35 years as a coach. The holding call was huge. If you're wearing red, it was a great call. If you're wearing purple it was a horrible call."
The success of TB Jamal Sullivan early:
"We hit them with some outside zones, early. We just couldn't move the ball against them. I thought it'd be a defensive game. Nothing surprised me during the game. I thought we would struggle to move the ball against them."
The lack of ball protection:
"I don't know why [ball protections] wasn't good today. We didn't plan on it. It's not like we called a meeting this morning and said we're going to fumble the ball all day. We just turned the ball over."
The feeling of disappointment after the loss:
"I'm crushed. I'm upset with the call with three minutes left in the game. Their defense played great, but that was so big of a call, I don't know if I've ever seen a call as big as that one was, that was a huge call. Richmond's kids played hard. Both groups of kids played very hard. Both [Donte] Boston and [John] Laub played well."
