The Game
No. 21 Richmond is home for the final time in the 2010 regular season Saturday, hosting Rhode Island on Senior Day at Robins Stadium.
Eleven seniors will be recognized in a pregame ceremony -- WR Kevin Grayson, RB Tyler Kirchoff, OL Drew Lachenmayer, LB Eric McBride, DL Martin Parker, CB Justin Rogers, LB Tyler Sullivan, LB Patrick Weldon, SS Max Prokell, LB Casey Cooley.
Richmond has won two-straight over the Rams, 10 of past 11 meetings and leads the all-time series versus Rhode Island 12-5. The teams last met at UR Stadium in 2007 -- a 38-6 Spider win.
A victory Saturday keeps Richmond's playoff hopes alive, and clinches a winning record for the sixth-consecutive season -- the second-longest streak at Richmond (seven-straight between 1916-1922).
A win also allows this seniors to tie last year's seniors as the winningest Senior Class in school history with 35 victories.
The Spiders are 13-3 in their last 16 games versus former CAA North Division teams.
Quick Slants
The Spiders are ranked in the Sports Network/Fathead.com Top 25 for the 50th-straight poll.
Senior CB Justin Rogers, regarded as one of the most versatile and explosive players in the FCS, is a three-time All-America and a nominee for the Buck Buchanan Award. He has 12 career INTs, 6 career return TDs, and currently leads CAA Football and is No. 13 in the NCAA in punt return yards (13.7).
Rogers also stands as the CAA Football career leader in kickoff return yards with 2,486. He broke the previous record of 2,433 set by former Villanova star and nine-year NFL veteran Brian Westbrook.
Rogers is a dynamic threat in all three aspects of the game -- one of the leagues top shutdown corners, a standout return specialist, and has rushed five times this season, thrown one pass and caught two balls.
Richmond continues to lead CAA Football in Red Zone offense (ranked 4th in the FCS) -- scoring points in 21 of 23 trips (91%), including 14 TDs.
Senior LB Eric McBride is the CAA's second-leading tackler and ranked 12th in the FCS in tackles (11.2/game). The local standout, who owns the longest active streak of consecutive starts in CAA Football (52), stands 3rd on Richmond's career tackles list (428) -- needs 2 more for second place.
Senior DL Martin Parker is tops among defensive linemen at 8.6 tackles/game and ranks 5th in the CAA in tackles for loss (9.0 total) -- Parker has 13 more tackles than the next highest DL in the league.
Richmond has an NCAA-leading 3 players on the "watch list" for the Buck Buchanan Award (FCS top defensive player) -- Parker, Rogers and McBride.
Sophomore QB John Laub is slated to start vs. URI -- the third different QB to start and the sixth different Spider to throw a pass this season.
