Dec. 7, 2010
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND - Richmond senior LB Eric McBride and senior DT Martin Parker have been selected to the 2010 AFCA All-America Team, which was announced Tuesday by the American Football Coaches Association. It marks the second-consecutive year a Spider has been named to the team.
The AFCA All-America Team is comprised of 25 standouts from the Football Championship Subdivision and is selected by members of the AFCA -- the only college football All-America team voted on exclusively by coaches. Richmond was on of five teams with multiple selections.
McBride, who was honored as the CAA Football Defensive Player of the Year and is a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, started all 54 games of his career - the longest active streak in CAA Football - and finished 2010 with the league's second-most tackles (119). The two-time CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week tied for the league-lead in fumble recoveries (three), and finished the year with two forced fumbles, two interceptions, 6.0 tackles for loss and four pass breakups. The big-time playmaker is ranked second all-time at Richmond in tackles (446).
A local product from L.C. Bird High in Richmond, McBride is also one of three finalists for the 2010 Dudley Award, which is presented annually to best college football player in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Dudley Award winner is announced tonight at the Touchdown Club of Richmond banquet.
Parker, also named a Buchanan Award finalist and a First Team All-CAA Football selection, led all CAA Football defensive linemen in tackles (8.7 per game) and was second overall in the league in total sacks (5.5) and total TFL (13.5) this year. He posted five double-digit tackle games, including 13 versus Delaware and 12 versus Towson. The New Haven, Conn. native was a Second Team All-CAA Football pick in 2009.
Last season, former OL Matt McCracken and then-junior DB Justin Rogers were AFCA All-America honorees.
Still to be announced are All-America squads from the Associated Press, the Walter Camp Foundation, the Sports Network and the College Sporting News.
