Richmond Football Extends Top-10 Streak To 35th-Consecutive Poll

Aug. 17, 2010
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND - The Sports Network announced its 2010 Preseason Top 25, and the Richmond Spiders are picked No. 6 in the poll. It marks the 40th-consecutive time the Spiders have been ranked in the Top 25, and 35th-straight time in the Top 10.
The Spiders carry the nation's second-longest Top-10 streak into the 2010 season, trailing the 62-consecutive polls that Appalachian State has been ranked among the Top 10. Montana's streak of 164-consecutive times ranked in the Top 25 is the nation's longest.
Richmond has not left the Top 25 since entering the Sports Network Poll at No. 25 on Sept. 24, 2007. The Spiders have not dropped out of the Top 10 since appearing at No. 9 on Nov. 5, 2007.
The reigning CAA Football Champions, Richmond returns seven standouts that were selected to the Preseason All-CAA Football Team - matching the seven picks from reigning National Champion Villanova for the league lead. Yet the Spiders were also tabbed sixth in the preseason coaches' poll, behind Villanova, William & Mary, New Hampshire, James Madison and Delaware.
Villanova was picked as the overall No. 1 for 2010 in the Sports Network poll, getting 104 first-place votes. William & Mary was fourth, Richmond sixth and New Hampshire 10th to round out the four league school's among the Top 10. Also ranked were James Madison (15th) and Delaware (16th).
Richmond's grueling 2010 schedule features each of the five league teams ranked, in addition to preseason No. 7 Elon, along with Massachusetts and Coastal Carolina, who were each receiving votes.
The Spiders open the 2010 season Saturday, Sept. 4 at Virginia. The home opener and the inaugural home-opener at the new Robins Stadium on campus is set for Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. versus Elon. Tickets are currently unavailable for all six home games, but road-games tickets can be purchased by calling the Robins Center Ticket Office at 1-877-SPIDER-1.
