Aug. 21, 2010
Interviews: Coach Scott
| Jovan Smith & Wayne Pettus
The Richmond Football Team scrimmaged for the second-consecutive Saturday at Robins, with the Spiders spreading five rushing touchdowns among the team's four backs, while the defense forced six turnovers.
A pair of underclassmen turned in the day's biggest highlights as true freshman Wayne Pettus intercepted a pass on the near side and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown and redshirt freshman Jovan Smith scampering 20 yards for a score in the Red Zone period.
"The defense obviously controlled the first half of the scrimmage," said head coach Latrell Scott. "But I challenged the offense to respond in the second half, and they did."
Of the six turnovers forced by the defense - five came before the halftime break. Redshirt freshman Christian Parker and junior Ryan Sweeney had the first-half interceptions to go along with two fumbles recovered by the defense. Sophomore Derek Mayo's interception came late in the scrimmage during the two-minute drill.
The two longest plays of the day were non-scoring as freshman QB Marcus Snipes for 50 yards and junior Garrett Wilkins returned a kickoff 46 yards.
Sophomore kicker Martin Parker.
The running game was in full-force to set up Richmond's first offensive score. Smith got things rolling with a 12-yard gain. Sophomore FB Kendall Gaskins had an eight-yard rush and converted a key third-and-two with a three-yard burst up the middle. Gaskins capped it off with a two-yard plunge.
Gaskins added another five-yard TD run in the Red Zone period, and senior Tyler Kirchoff followed with a six-yard TD rush on the next drive. Both runs were set-up by Aaron Corp passes - 10-yards to Kirchoff and 14 yards to true freshman Ben Edwards.
An overtime period followed the Red Zone sets. Kamin booted his 35-yarder on the first series. Wilkins was key in the second series as he rushed for seven yards on third-and-five. His eight-yard TD rush came on second-and-goal.
The Spiders will have two days off - Sunday and the first day of classes Monday - before returning the practice field Tuesday afternoon.
