The Game
Under first-year head coach Latrell Scott, Richmond opens its 128th season of football Saturday, Sept. 4 with a Commonwealth battle versus Virginia at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville.
The story lines run deep for the much-anticipated season-opener as the Spiders face former head coach Mike London, who now runs the sideline at Virginia. Richmond's new head coach Latrell Scott was the Cavaliers' WR coach last season. In all, the Spiders have seven staffers with UVa connections, while five Cavalier coaches have ties to Richmond.
The Spiders have defeated an ACC opponent in two of the last five seasons (beating Duke 16-0 in 2006 and 24-16 last season).
Richmond's streak of 12-straight road wins is the FCS's longest and second-longest in the NCAA.
Quick Slants
Richmond lost 15 senior starters from last year's team that went 11-2, claimed the CAA Football title, reached the NCAA Quarterfinals and tied a school record for fewest losses in a season. But the Spiders welcome back a corps of skill-position players that are among the elite in the league.
Junior QB Aaron Corp, who transferred from Southern California in January, beat out returning sophomore John Laub as the starter in Training Camp. Corp was the starter-to-be at USC before breaking his leg prior to the 2008 season.
The Spiders boast seven Preseason All-CAA Football selections, which is tied with reigning National Champion Villanova for the league lead.
Richmond has three players on the preseason "watch list" for the Buck Buchanan Award (FCS top defensive player) -- DL Martin Parker, CB Justin Rogers and LB Eric McBride.
Including the 2008 season, which ended when the Spiders claimed the school's first-ever National Championship, Richmond has reached the postseason in three-straight years and four of the past five.
Richmond native and former Spider assistant Latrell Scott assumes the reigns of the Richmond program this season. Scott, 35, is the third-youngest D-I football head coach. Widely regarded as an accomplished recruiter, Scott spent 2008 as the WR coach at Tennessee and 2009 as the WR coach at Virginia, following three years at Richmond.
After playing off campus for eight decades, the Spiders are back on the Richmond campus this season when their $25 million E. Claiborne Robins Stadium opens Sept. 18 vs. Elon. Tickets are currently unavailable for all six home games.
