2010 Training Camp: Day 1 News And Notes

Aug. 5, 2010
With the temperature nearing 100 degrees, the Richmond Spiders officially opened 2010 Training Camp Thursday afternoon at Robins Stadium. It's just 43 days until the first-ever football game is played at the Stadium, when Elon visits for the inaugural home-opener.
The workout was crisp, but cut just a bit short when a wicked thunderstorm rolled through. Given the heat and humidity, first-year head coach Latrell Scott was happy with the Day One results.
"I thought we came out with a spirited effort," said Scott. "The guys came out fired up, moved quick and got to their spots. It's obviously tough to tell without pads, but I liked the effort. The guys are still getting re-adjusted to the speed of the game."
The biggest question mark facing Scott and the Spiders as Training Camp opens is at the quarterback position. And none of those questions were answered after the first three hours of camp.
"Both guys are rotating with the first-team offense and both looked solid today," said Scott.
The Spiders ran Thursday's practice without pads, and will do so for the next three workouts. The first pads practice is set for Monday.
"The offense only had one turnover, and that was an interception by Tremayne Graham returned for a touchdown," said Scott. "So that's positive on both sides of the ball."
The Spiders are back on the field Friday at 3 p.m. with another 100-degree forecasted in Richmond.
"The heat is something we'll have to deal with," said Scott. "We'll work closely with our medical staff to monitor the situation and take the necessary precautions. It's encouraging that we made it through the first day with no significant issues."
The next open-to-the-public practice is schedule for Monday, August 9.
Day 1 Notes
Where are the QBs?: The four QBs on the roster -- #19 John Laub, #7 Aaron Corp, #14 Montel White and #17 Chase Boyer - donned the same white jerseys as the other offensive players (the defense was in blue). Although it's common practice in camp to signify QBs in a bright color, Scott is taking a different approach. "QBs are just like everyone else," he said.
Practice Playlist: Music will be used during camp both for entertainment, and more importantly to simulate game situations with loud crowd noise. The Spiders ended Thursday's workout with live field-goal situations, and the music was blasting.
First On The Turf: Kicker Wil Kamin was the first player on the field for the first-ever Training Camp practice at Robins Stadium. He trotted on at approximately 2:23 p.m. for the 3 p.m. practice.
