Player Notes
Eric Ward last year versus Elon (136 yards on Nov. 28, 2009)... Smith is the first Richmond RB to surpass 100-yards since former back Justin Forte (121 yards) last season at Towson (Oct. 31).
Smith's day included career-highs for carries (10), yards (102) and long rush (32 yards).
Sophomore TE Kevin Finney caught his first career TD pass.
Senior LB Eric McBride recorded 10 tackles, which improved his career tackles total to 357 and now stands seventh on the Spiders' all-time list.
Senior CB Justin Rogers, who also earned the start at WR Saturday, gained 100 yards on his five kickoff returns. Rogers is the Spiders' career leader in kickoff return yardage (2,287) and now needs just 147 yards to break the CAA Football career record (2,433 -- Brian Westbrook).
Senior DL Martin Parker recorded a game-high 13 tackles (two shy of his career-high), had 2.0 TFL and blocked his first career kick -- a PAT try by Delaware.
Team Notes
Richmond suffered its first double-digit home loss since the 2006 season (31-7 loss to Towson, Nov. 11, 2006).
With the loss, Richmond moved to 18-6 in games versus Top 25 teams since the start of the 2007 season (9-5 versus Top 10 teams).
Spiders have been scored on first in each of their first three games (all touchdowns).
Thanks to Parker's blocked PAT, Richmond has blocked a kick in each of the last two games (senior Casey Cooley blocked a FG last week in OT versus Elon). The Spiders have blocked six kicks (FG, punt and PAT) since the start of the 2009 season.
Delaware kicker Mike Perry also missed a 40-yard FG try (off the right upright) and Richmond opponents are now 0-for-5 in FG attempts this season.
The TD catch by Kevin Finney with 30 seconds left in the first half was the first TD allowed by Delaware this season. In fact, the Blue Hens were the last team in the NCAA (Division I, II or III) to allow a touchdown against. Delaware had held opponents without a TD for 14 straight quarters (dating back to the final game of 2009) -- a total of 233:01 of game-clock time.
Richmond's back-to-back touchdowns Saturday marked the first time this season the Delaware defense had allowed scores on back-to-back possessions.
