Gameday Game Plan: Week 8 vs. Maine

Top 3 Matchups
Tre Gray vs. Trevor Coston
Led by senior WR Tre Gray, who continues to set the pace among the league’s wideouts at 113.8 yards per game, the Spiders possess one of the league’s most lethal combos at the positions. Redshirt freshman WR Stephen Barnette is quickly developing into a key role, but Gray and Barnette will be tested by a Maine secondary that has 11 interceptions this season. Maine FS Trevor Coston’s four picks leads the lead and DB Darlos James is third in the league with three.
Ryan Goss and Richard Muldrow vs. Michael Cole
Anchored by seniors LG Ryan Goss and LT Richard Muldrow, the Spiders offensive line did not allow a sack in the Towson game and gave senior QB Aaron Corp time to complete 91.2 percent of his passes (31-of-34) that set an FCS single-game record. But sophomore DE Michael Cole ranks fourth in the league with his four sacks.
BJ Scott vs. Pushaun Brown
Sophomore DE BJ Scott (30 tackles, 4.5 TFL) has been the only healthy original starter on the defensive line over the past three games and the Spiders will need a big effort from him Saturday. Maine’s Pushaun Brown is the league’s second-leading rusher at 106.5 yards per game and has scored six touchdowns.
Spider Advantages
Aerial Act
Look for another Robins Stadium shootout as both offenses have been high-octane. Richmond senior QB Aaron Corp is the league’s second-leading passer at 247.2 yards per game with nine TDs, while senior WR Tre Gray leads the league in receiving. Ball control – something Richmond has done a much better job with over the last two games with -- will be the name of the game against a Maine team that owns the eighth-best turnover margin in the FCS at +8.
"Win One For The Tater"
The University of Richmond lost a life-long Spider this week as former player, coach and broadcaster Ray Tate passed away at the age of 68 following a long illness. Tate was Richmond Football. Expect Saturday to be an emotion one for many Spiders, who would like nothing more than to “win one for the Tater.”
Stat of the Week
Richmond allowed just 113.3 yards per game rushing in the first three games of the season. But over the last three, with an injury-plagued defensive line missing four starters, Richmond has allowed 221.7 yard per game on the ground.
Quotes of the Week
“We need to do a better job of, when the opportunity presents itself, making a play, whether it's a tipped pass, or a ball right to us, or a strip. We've got to try to make sure we get some of those plays."-- head coach Wayne Lineburg
"We were a team that lacked some on-field discipline (in penalties and turnovers). The most significant changes that have taken place in this program relate to those areas."
-- Maine head coach Jack Cosgrove
