Postgame Quotes: No. 6 Richmond Beats VMI, 34-19
Richmond Head Coach Wayne
Lineburg
Opening statement:
"First off, any time you win a game, you know,
congratulations to the kids, you know they played hard. Obviously the second
half we kind of let back in the game, we went out there to make some plays but
our defense came back and made some plays or two and this and that we have to
do a better job of finishing games.
Congratulations to the kids, they played well and enough for us to win
it. We got to correct some of the
mistakes that we made out there in the second half and get ready to go for next
week."
Improvements before next week:
"The things that we saw and I saw out there, obviously I
have to watch the film first before I make any final judgments. You need to run the ball consistently and our
offense needs to be running the ball better.
We struggled during times, running the ball against VMI and I give them
credit too. They played hard and after
we didn't run the ball as well as we are capable of running it the first two
weeks so that's something we got to improve on.
And you know, defensively we gave up some big plays there during the
second half, cutting a guy lose a couple times on a seam the ball. We can't have that. And just special units
and special teams, we didn't do as well as we need to do and we let VMI have
too many return yards which is uncharacteristic of our special teams unit. That's something we really got to address
this week."
"Well, I mean, this is a great group of kids and they've hung together through everything that is going on and to be in the position to be 3-0 is something you got to like but there are a lot of things that we got to get, the things I just mentioned we got to get corrected or we are not going to be able to come out on top during conference games if we don't get some of these things corrected. But definitely coming in 3-0 in the conference in non-conference schedule is something we certainly have to be proud of but we got to fix some things to be ready."
Being 3-0 in non-conference play:
"I certainly think it gets us off to a great start and just
gives the kids some confidence in what they can do in the conference schedule
and we know full well going into this conference what it is like every week and
I've told them every game in this league seems to come down to the fourth
quarter and all my experience in this conference, that's what it comes down
to. And if that was a game today, we
would've struggled in the fourth quarter and not finishing in the way that we
need to."
Special Teams:
"Those guys a great job in the coverage units. We just got to maybe look at the plays there
and maybe get some of those things covered up.
But as far as the punt, they did a great job blocking the punt and by
and large our special teams for a long time has been sound. Coach Legg does a great job with that but
some of those things will get corrected this week. Those guys, Stephen Barnette
made a play today too and everybody makes a big difference when you make some
big plays down the field. That's
something we liked last year, to make those throws down the field and that helps
change the momentum."
VMI Head coach Sparky
Woods
Opening statement:
"I just want to start out and congratulate Coach Lineburg
and Richmond. They're a really fine football team, an undefeated football team
right now. They're talented and a well-coached team. I think Wayne has done a
really remarkable job. I'm really disappointed in our first half. We felt like
it was just a shame. We could've had an outstanding football game. We had a lot
of respect for Richmond coming into the game. Our special teams in the first half
kept it from being a fun game to be a part of. I was proud of our team for
coming back in the second half. I thought we played better in the second half,
after shooting ourselves in the foot with turnovers. It was a shame the game
got so out of hand in the first half. I was proud of our guys for coming back
and playing hard in the second half. We just need to put two halves together to
beat a really outstanding team like Richmond. Congratulations to Richmond, we
have a lot to fix."
Halftime motivational talk:
"It wasn't anything in particular. We just talked about
fixing special teams. We needed to make sure where the ball was. We just talked
about executing and doing our responsibilities better. We moved the ball
decently in the first half. We just got taken out of the game due to our
special teams. When you get way behind, it changes your view as I'm sure it did
Richmond's. I was proud of how we competed throughout the game."
QB Eric Kordenbrock
Overall performance:
"When one guy makes a mistake, it messes up the other 10
guys. Overall, I think we came out flat the first half. Richmond's a great
team, not to take anything away from them, but we definitely should've been in
a closer game than what it was. I think we showed that when we came out in the
second half. We executed as Coach Woods has taught us to do. If we do that in
the future, we should be a pretty good team."
Second-half play:
"Everyone was just clicking together. We knew where to go
with the ball. Tracy [Hairston] made a great play. That's something you would
see at any level of college football, even the pros. That was a great catch.
The big thing was we just came out [in second half] and played football. We
didn't think about anything else. We just did what we're supposed to do, full
speed. Which is what you're supposed to do, what you need to do to win games."
Overcoming the deficit:
"It's difficult but we're trying to get this program started
again. We're trying to get it back to where it used to be. At halftime, we all
just looked at each other and said, 'We need to play like it's 0-0 and we want
to win the game.' We need to have a winning attitude all the time, not just
when you're in practice. Coach Woods is doing a good job of making us turn
around and get back on that streak."
