Postgame Quotes: No. 11 New Hampshire Beats UR, 45-43
Richmond Head Coach
Wayne Lineburg
Opening statement:
"Obviously, it was a disappointing outcome. Give New
Hampshire credit. They made plays and made enough plays to win a game. On our
side of the ball our kids gave a tremendous amount of effort. There's no quit
in this football team. They're a great group of kids. We just made too many
mistakes, things we can't do against a good team like New Hampshire. It caught
up to us. We made a great effort to come back and win but we had done too much
to put ourselves in a hole."
Turnovers:
"It's something we have to work on and get fixed. If we had
prevented those things from happening, it would probably be a different
outcome, a different atmosphere. We have to continue to work to improve
ourselves."
Missed PAT:
"Things happen. But he also made three field goals. You
can't point the finger at any one play, any one player when things don't go
right. We have to look at ourselves to look better. We stick together. He's
made a lot of plays around here and I expect him to make many more."
Absence of two defensive linemen:
"I'm sure those guys could've helped but the kids we had
played hard. We can't make excuses for guys who aren't there. We play with what
we have. We roll with it. Guys have to step up and play next week."
Playing true freshmen:
"We were in a position, depth-wise where we didn't think we
had enough depth at a certain position. We have to get some guys in there to
play. We feel like we have a good
football team. We might be shy in a couple of areas but those kids have to
continue to keep getting better and growing up. We're going to do what we can
to win. Obviously if we had our choice, we'd redshirt every one of them, but
right now we don't have that luxury."
Offensive output against a conference opponent
"Our offense certainly did some nice things, but I don't
know if there's any consolation with a loss. We were disappointed in not
winning. We just have to find a way to bounce back this week. We have a good
group of kids that will bounce back. We have a good group of leaders that will
have us ready for a tough game next week in Harrisonburg. Our guys will be
ready to play."
Fake field goal:
"It's something we had been working on for awhile. We got
down there and stalled out. Coach Polin and Coach Legg have been working on it
and they thought we had a great opportunity to get the score. So we rolled the
dice, and it worked great."
WR Trey Gray
"You go into every game with that feeling [of having a good
game]. I never have any doubt in my mind that we won't click. That first drive
was an excellent drive. It worked out for us."
Success against UNH defense:
"I just did what I was told. Coach called the plays and we
ran them. I just did my job."
New Hampshire Head coach
Sean McDonnell
Opening statement:
"You know, wild football game folks. You know, two pretty good teams playing out
there and a lot of fireworks, a lot of different things. I thought both teams played very well at
times and other times got pretty sloppy.
And you watch some of the things happened out there- two interceptions
for touch downs for us, one by Vines, one by Evans, gave us a big
opportunity. We were down ten nothing to
we came back to go ahead and then we scored late the third. You know, we go up
35-23 and 38-23 to feel confident. I
think Corp is a hell of a football player.
I've watched him before our game last year and then watching the first
three games this year. You know, he puts
the ball to people. I can't say enough
about Tre Gray; that kid's the best receiver in the league. I've watched him make catches. He had the on-side kick, you know, right in
front of me. I guess he cramped up and
our guy got it from under him. Just a
hell of a CAA game. Great win, we stayed
the course for four quarters and finally won it at the end."
In reaction to interception returns:
"Well I think, what it did for us is give us some confidence
defensively that we could stick in the game a little bit. And as we went on, I thought Richmond
attacked us pretty well and did a great job of finding some seams but our kids felt
it and got to the pass and got to the ball.
And you know, those two interceptions, I think the biggest thing was
that they were points. We got points off
of them, that's fourteen points. If you
take that away, to make another obvious statement is would've had a tough time
winning this game."
In reaction to their comeback:
"I saw a lot of the resiliency two weeks ago against
Lehigh. We were down 41-38 after being
up 38-20 and we weren't playing real well.
We came back with a field goal to tie it and then won in overtime down
there. You know, we felt good about
it. You know these kids want to
win. I think they know how to win over
the last couple of years but doing it is a different thing. And then they stayed the course. We've talked about that, on the road and in
this league how you got to stay the course with four quarters here and you got
to find a way to win somehow, some way.
You know, the past, I was listening to that kid RJ and Jimmy Carter
during coach's talk. I asked them how do
you run the ball and then I saw how a lot of the guys do what they're
doing. And I like that aggressive style
and I thought that we would punt again and try to stop them but I'm not very
smart and we couldn't do that either.
LB Matt Evans
Turnovers:
"We stress that every single week. We start every practice with a turnover
circuit and since I've been here, that's been a huge emphasis. And obviously, we did well with that last
year and the coaches stress it so it turns into games."
QB Kevin Decker
Richmond's defense:
"They have a very good defense; they are very big upfront
and we got a lot athleticism in the second with Grant and Cooper. But we thought that we had a pretty good idea
of when they were going to play pressure and when they were going to get behind
us. We were pretty confident that we could
call bouts according to that.
