The Game
• Coming off a season-opening 23-21 win at Duke -- the Spiders’ third-straight win over the Blue Devils -- Richmond hosts Wagner in the 2011 home-opener Saturday night at Robins Stadium.
• The game marks the first under the lights at Robins Stadium, which opened last season.
• This is the first meeting between Richmond and Wagner, and the Spiders have won their last six meetings versus a first-time opponent.
• The head coaches in Saturday’s game mark near-extremes in terms of experience. Wagner’s Walt Hameline is in his 31st year at the school, while Richmond’s interim head coach Wayne Lineburg is in his second week at the helm.
• The reigning National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week clash tonight -- Richmond S Cooper Taylor had 14 tackles at Duke, while Wagner RB Dominique Williams rushed for 180 yards and two TDs vs. St. Francis (Pa.).
Quick Slants
• The University of Richmond is in its 128th season of football and the Spiders have recorded six-consecutive winning seasons, which is the longest streak at Richmond since seven-straight winning campaigns in the 1920s.
• Junior S Cooper Taylor (pictured) made a game-high 14 tackles, forced a fumble and broke up a pass in the Duke win and was named the CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week and Sports Network/Fathead.com National Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts.
• Senior WR Tre Gray set career-highs in catches (eight) and yards (129) at Duke, moving to within 627 yards and 43 catches of setting the Spiders’ respective career receiving records.
• Richmond returns 13 starters and 49 letterwinners from last season’s injury-plagued team that saw four different QBs see action throughout the season, yet still entered the final week of the regular-season in contention for an NCAA Playoff spot.
• The Spiders entered the 2011 season ranked No. 16 (Sports Network) and jumped to No. 9 this week following the Duke win. The Spiders are back in the Top 25 after not being ranked in the final poll of the 2010 season -- marking the first time Richmond hadn’t been ranked since early 2007.
• Richmond went 5-1 last season at home in its first year at E. Claiborne Robins Stadium. The Spiders opened the new $25 million on-campus facility after playing 81 years off campus.
• Senior QB Aaron Corp returns for his final season of eligibility, and the transfer from USC is regarded as one of the leading FCS signal-callers this year and was listed as one of six NFL draft “sleepers” by the Sporting News.
• The Spiders have won 12-consecutive non-conference regular-season FCS games dating back to the 2005 season.
