Offensive Line Leading the Country
The Richmond Spiders are leading the nation heading into this weekend, having allowed just one sack all year. The Spiders are tied with The Citadel atop the category, having given up just one sack against then No.4-ranked Old Dominion on September 29.
Gaskins Continues Climb in Record Book
With his three touchdown performance at No. 12/13 New Hampshire last Saturday, senior FB Kendall Gaskins now ranks third on the Spiders' all-time scoring list with 31 touchdowns. Gaskins now has nine TDs this season (7 rushing, 2 receiving). Gaskins stands four scores behind Josh Vaughan and eight behind school-record holder Tim Hightower with 39.
Ball-Hawking Defense
Coming into Saturday's game against James Madison, the Richmond Spiders have totaled 12 interceptions in just seven contests - best in the CAA and tied for second-best in the country. DB Cooper Taylor and DB Doug Howell are tied for the conference lead with three, while DB Darryl Hamilton has a pair of picks.
On This Date in Spider Football History
On October 20, 1973, the Spiders defeated West Virginia, 38-17, in Richmond. Led by head coach Frank Jones, the Spiders ended the 1973 season with an overall record of 8-2, finishing second in the Southern Conference standings.
Spiders Amongst Most Disciplined Teams in the Country
Coming into Saturday's game against James Madison, the Spiders rank very highly nationally in both fewest penalties per game and fewest penalty yards per game. Richmond ranks seventh in the country in fewest penalty yards per game (36.4) and 12th in the nation in fewest penalties per game (4.57).
Edwards Continues to Impress
Redshirt junior WR Ben Edwards is having a breakout 2012 campaign for the Spiders. Edwards leads the CAA and ranks fifth nationally with 51 receptions, while his 636 receiving yards are second-best in the league. Edwards also ranks ninth in the country in catches per game at 7.29.
Wright Racking Up Tackles
Redshirt sophomore Eric Wright has made his presence known to opposing offenses this year, as the linebacker leads the team with 52 stops on the season - eighth best in the CAA. Wright has 25 solo tackles on the year to go with 1.5 tackles for loss.
Spiders Sell-Out for 12th Time in Robins Stadium History
The Richmond Spiders continue to sell out Robins Stadium, as all three games this season have reached capacity at 8,700. Since opening prior to the 2010 season, Richmond has sold out 12 contests, including the past eight in a row.
Laub Suffers Ankle Injury at New Hampshire
QB John Laub suffered a broken bone in his ankle against the Wildcats on October 13. Laub underwent successful surgery the following day, with recovery expected in six weeks. Through seven games, Laub completed 143-of-237 passes for 1,722 yards and nine touchdowns. The Coplay, Pa. native also led the Spiders in rushing, totaling 356 yards and running for six more scores.
