Richmond Enters the National Rankings
After defeating then No. 2-ranked James Madison on October 20, the Richmond Spiders entered The Sports Network rankings at No. 25. The Spiders then rose three spots in the latest poll to No. 22. The national ranking is the first for Richmond in exactly a year, as the Spiders were last ranked No. 18 in the country on October 22, 2011.
Spiders Strong on Homecoming
Saturday's Homecoming game for the Spiders will be their 82nd all-time dating back to the 1929 season. Richmond has posted an overall record of 41-34-6 (.543) on Homecoming and has won three of its last five. The Spiders are 2-0 on Homecoming against Rhode Island, defeating the Rams in 1987 and 2001.
Offensive Line Leading the Country
The Richmond Spiders are leading the nation heading into this weekend, having allowed just one sack all season. The Spiders are tied with The Citadel atop the category, having given up just one sack against then No.4-ranked Old Dominion on September 29.
Gaskins Continues Climb in Record Book
With his 4-yard touchdown run against James Madison, FB Kendall Gaskins recorded his 10th score of the season, upping his career mark to 32. Gaskins ranks third on the Spiders' all-time scoring list, just three behind Josh Vaughan and seven behind school-record holder Tim Hightower.
On This Date in Spider Football History
On November 3, 1984, the Richmond Spiders defeated Colgate, 55-24, in Richmond. The 1984 team would go on to reach the NCAA Quarterfinals - the first playoff team in school history. In the quarterfinals, the Spiders lost at Rhode Island, 23-17.
Roane Named CAA Defensive Player of the Week
After totaling a career-high 14 tackles and a sack against James Madison, DB Aaron Roane was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Week on October 22. On the season, the West Point, Va. native leads Richmond in tackles with 61.
Ball-Hawking Defense
Coming into Saturday's game against Rhode Island, the Richmond Spiders have totaled 14 interceptions in just eight contests - best in the CAA. DB Doug Howell leads the team with four INTs, while DB Cooper Taylor has three to pace the Richmond defense.
Spiders Amongst Most Disciplined Teams in the Country
Coming into Saturday's game against Rhode Island, the Spiders rank highly in a number of national categories. Richmond ranks in a tie for fourth in turnover margin (+12), ninth in the country in fewest penalty yards per game (39.38) and tied for 12th in the nation in fewest penalties per game (4.88).
