Rocco Powers Richmond to Impressive Turnaround
Heading into this weekend's game at William & Mary,
first year head coach Danny Rocco has guided the Spiders to the fourth-best
turnaround in the FCS this season. The
four-win improvement sits just behind Charleston Southern, Fordham and Eastern
Illinois - all of which have improved by five wins this season.
Spiders Leading the Nation
Entering the weekend, the Richmond Spiders lead the nation
in a pair of impressive categories. The
Spiders lead the country in turnover margin at +20 and also lead the FCS in
interceptions with 23. Richmond has
intercepted at least one pass in eight straight games and has an amazing nine
INTs in the last two contests.
Gaskins Continues Climb in Record Book
With his pair of touchdown runs in the Spiders' 23-17 win
over Delaware last week, FB Kendall Gaskins recorded his 13th and 14th scores
of the season, upping his career mark to 36.
Gaskins passed Josh Vaughan for second place all-time and now sits just
three scores behind school-record holder Tim Hightower. Gaskins' 33 rushing TDs are tied for third
most all-time, just one behind Vaughan and Hightower who share the program
record with 34.
On This Date in Spider Football History
On November 17, 1917, the Richmond Spiders traveled to
Williamsburg to face the Tribe for the 26th time. The Spiders' defense was
stout in the contest, leading Richmond to a 19-0 victory over the Tribe.
Edwards Having Historic Season
Junior WR Ben Edwards is having one of the finest receiving
seasons in program history for the Spiders this year. Edwards' 67 receptions in
2012 are tied for the third-most in any single season, while his 121 career
catches rank him 10th all-time.
Picks, Picks and More Picks
Interceptions have been coming in bunches this season for
the Spiders, with Darryl Hamilton, Doug Howell and Cooper Taylor leading the
way. Hamilton and Howell are tied for seventh
in the country with five INTs apiece, while Taylor has four picks.
Team Effort Leads Spiders Past Delaware
In front of a sold-out crowd of 8,700 at Robins Stadium last
weekend, the Richmond Spiders defeated Delaware, 23-17. FB Kendall Gaskins had a pair of touchdown
runs, while the Richmond defense forced five Blue Hen turnovers en route to the
team's third-straight win.
Offensive Line Amongst Best in Country
The Richmond Spiders offensive line has been terrific all
season, having given up just four sacks on the year. The four sacks are tied for second fewest in
the country, behind The Citadel who has given up just one.
Lights Out When Leading at the Half
Richmond is 54-5 since the start of 2004 when leading at the
half (6-0 in 2012). The four setbacks came in 2006 at No. 1 UNH, in 2004 versus
No. 12 Maine, in 2008 versus No. 1 James Madison, to No. 5 Appalachian State in
the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2010 and to No. 9 Maine in 2011.
