Spider Football Practice Report No. 5

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond Spiders football team finally got a break from the heat and humidity on Friday morning, practicing in relatively cool and cloudy conditions. The Spiders, wearing full pads for the first time in camp, practiced for two hours at Robins Stadium.
This season, all practices during training camp are open to the public. With practices being held at both Robins Stadium and the Grass Practice Fields on River Road, fans attending practice are asked to remain in the bleachers. In Robins Stadium, fans are asked to sit in the stands on the west side of the stadium.
In a highly spirited practice, the players participated in 1-on-1 run drills and box tackles in the first portion of the two-hour session.
In the 7-on-7 drills, the defense played very well, not letting the Richmond offense find any sort of rhythm. During the drills, LB Walt Sparks, DB Chris Speros and LB Eric Wright all broke up passes.
When the linemen joined both the offenses and defenses for 11-on-11 drills, the theme stayed the same. DB DeShawn Holmes made a great play on the ball, nearly coming away with an interception.
Offensively, a pair of running backs made some impressive plays. Redshirt freshman Dominique Miller took a screen pass on the left and scrambled through traffic for a 20-yard gain. Later, freshman Jacobi Green took a hand-off and slashed through the right side of the defense for 15 yards.
The Richmond Spiders football team will be back on the turf at Robins Stadium for a two-hour practice starting at 9:45 a.m.
