Spider Football Practice Report No. 6
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders football team was back at practice Saturday morning at Robin Stadium and implemented its first scrimmage of the preseason.
The Spiders, running in full pads for the second time in training camp, practiced for two hours on a hot morning in Richmond. Richmond focused on short-yardage scenarios, as well as base fundamentals and techniques.
The Spiders worked on the 1-on-1 run game and individual drills early in practice before they geared up for the first scrimmage of camp, which focused on short yardage.
Despite the heat, both squads came out very physical and energetic. The defense started out strong keeping the offense on their toes. The Spiders broke up several short passes, including a quarterback hurry from DL Jacob Pierce who batted down a Michael Strauss pass.
During the final minutes of the scrimmage, the offense got the upper hand and executed well. FB James Pavik ended it on a high note, running for 10 yards down the right side.
Following the scrimmage, Richmond focused on special teams before getting into 11-on-11, which ended practice. Running a screen, Strauss found WR Ben Edwards who quickly broke through the defense for a potential 60-yard touchdown.
With the running back spot still open, all four backs continue to get reps. Sophomore Jacobi Green stood out today getting the most touches and ended practice with a five-yard run up the middle.
The Richmond Spiders football team will be back on field for practice Sunday at 2:15 p.m.
Post-Practice Quotes
“Today was pretty good. It was definitely the most physical day we have had so far. We had our first scrimmage of the camp and it was very physical. Both sides of the ball were really working hard to try to control the line of scrimmage. I think we continue to get better and we will continue to build upon some of our special situations here when we come out here tomorrow afternoon.”
