Spider Football Practice Report No. 8

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders football team began its first two-a-day on Tuesday morning at Robins Stadium.
The team practiced for two hours on a rainy, cool day in Richmond. The Spiders will be back at practice this afternoon for an hour and 45 minutes at the Grass Fields on River Road starting at 4 p.m.
In the morning practice, the team reviewed much of what it learned last week, going over the 1st and 2nd down offense and defense. The team also worked on its hurry-up offense for the first time in camp, with the first team looking sharp.
In the 11-on-11 drills, QB Michael Strauss and WR Ben Edwards continued their great training camps. The duo connected on a pair of long touchdown passes in the morning session.
The play of the day came late in practice, as WR Reggie Diggs made a tremendous, one-handed diving catch down the left sideline for 25 yards. RB T.J. Moon had a solid practice, reeling off a 25-yard run.
Defensively, DB Justin Grant continues to impress as he works with the first team defense at safety. On Tuesday, he had a nice pass breakup on a pass from Strauss. As for the defensive line, both DL Justin Williamson and DL Nick Velardo had a sack on QB David Broadus.
The Richmond Spiders will be back at practice this afternoon at 4 p.m. at the Grass Field on River Road. Practice on Wednesday will be at Robins Stadium at 9:45 a.m.
Post-Practice Quotes
“We’ve had a couple of good practices offensively lately but it was a little sluggish today with some of the elements like the rain. We have to do a better job of being consistent from one practice to the next.”
-- Tight Ends Coach Bill Polin
"We have been having a lot of good practices lately, but today was back and forth between the offense and defense. We are just trying to get better everyday and we have our first two-a-day today and that second practice should be a good one. We just have to keep getting better everyday and basically if the offense gets better, the defense gets better and vice versa."
-- OL Mark Speir
