Rocco Leads Spiders to Share of CAA Championship
In 2012, first-year head coach Danny Rocco led Richmond to a share of the CAA Football championship, posting an overall record of 8-3 and a conference mark of 6-2. The five-win turnaround is the second-best in the history of Richmond football, while the six-conference win improvement was the best in the CAA. The conference championship was the 11th in program history.
Richmond Looks to Extend Streak Against VMI
The Richmond Spiders are looking to extend their winning streak over VMI to 11 games on Saturday. The Spiders haven’t lost to the Keydets since 1996 and haven’t dropped a game to their in-state rivals in Richmond since 1991. The 11-game win streak would mark the longest for either team in a series that dates back to 1893.
First Season Opener at Home Since 2005
Richmond’s season opener against VMI will mark the first time since 2005 that the Spiders have begun their season at home. The last time was in 2005, when Richmond fell to No. 15 Massachusetts at City Stadium, 19-6.
Non-League Brilliance
Richmond has not lost a non-conference FCS game in the regular season since 2005 and is a spotless 16-0 since then. The last FCS loss in the regular season was at Lafayette, 7-0, in 2005. Including the Spiders’ annual game versus an FBS opponent, Richmond’s non-conference regular-season record since 2007 is 14-4 (that includes wins at Duke in 2009 and 2011).
Spiders Ranked 14/15th in the Country
The Spiders opened the season ranked No. 14 in the country in the FCS Coaches Poll and 15th in The Sports Network rankings released earlier this month. In other FCS preseason polls, Richmond is ranked 12th by Athlon College Football Poll, 15th by the Sporting News and 21st by Lindy’s.
Edwards Named to Senior Bowl Watch List
After a standout junior season, WR Ben Edwards was named to the prestigious Senior Bowl Watch List. The list includes just 42 players from the FCS and six from the CAA. Last season, Richmond DB Cooper Taylor was also named to the Senior Bowl Watch List.
