Spider Football Practice Report No. 2

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders football team continued training camp on Tuesday at Robins Stadium with the second practice of the fall.
The Spiders practiced for two hours on a cool, overcast day in Richmond. Practicing for the final day time without pads, the team focused on installation of 1st and 2nd down offense and defense, as well as base fundamentals and techniques.
For the final portion of practice, the offense and defense faced off in 11-on-11 drills. The defense looked sharp early, with DL B.J. Scott getting in to the backfield, forcing QB Michael Strauss to roll out, forcing a pass down field that was broken up by DB Reggie Barnette.
WR Shane Savage, a 2011 All-American at Cornell, made a pair of nice plays in practice, including a long, 60-yard run on a handoff from the wildcat formation.
On defense, DB Justin Grant, who worked with the first-team defense at safety, was flying around the field. On a deep seam pass, Grant made a great read, breaking up the intended pass, sending WR Will McCombs to the ground.
Despite the hard break up, McCombs had a great day, catching a pair of long passes. The first score came on a long pass down the seam from QB David Broadus, while his second TD came on a 60-yard catch-and-run on a pass from QB Kyle Lauletta.
The defense got in the end zone towards the end of the drills, as DB David Jones picked up a fumble in the backfield and trotted 30 yards for the score.
The Richmond Spiders football team will back at practice at Robins Stadium on Wednesday starting at 9:45 a.m.
Post-Practice Quotes
“I thought today we were pretty sharp. Offensively, the execution was significantly better in terms of the tempo in which we practiced. It was very cool out here this afternoon and the guys came out with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. As we head into tomorrow, we will put the shoulder pads on and things will be a little more physical out here. I think we are at a good spot right now on both sides of the ball. They seem to be running well and it could be a little bit more of a faster football team this year. The guys appear to be well conditioned and have good retention from the spring.”
