Postgame Quotes – No. 19/20 Richmond 37, Rhode Island 0
“I was happy the way our defense played obviously and happy with the score. Defensively, they played hard, took the ball away and gave us the short field. I just don't feel good about the intensity in which we executed tonight offensively, flat in the kicking game early and I can't let them off the hook. I can't quite figure these kids out. Our QB play was solid, 10 penalties, slow to the ball, illegal formations, the o-line wasn't physical and they didn't come off the ball. Almost the same way we were a year ago, which disappoints me to no end, and I didn't expect it at all."
-- Richmond head coach Danny Rocco on the Spiders’ play vs. Rhode Island
"It was disappointing to me, we are going to have to play a lot better than right there if we have any hope for a successful season moving forward. I didn't think that the leadership and maturity was there moving forward. I'm just so disappointed. You can recognize we did not have the zip tonight, and there are a lot of different places to look. If we play like this against Elon we will be beat. We need to stop being selfish, step up and represent."
-- Richmond head coach Danny Rocco continued
“It's disappointing. I'm accountable just as everyone else is, but we are going to get it fixed. It felt awesome to be back out there playing the full game. But as coach reiterated, it was not up to par. You hate to be disappointed on a 37-0 win, but the defense played great, and we are going to need to fix things.”
-- Richmond QB Michael Rocco added about the offense
“You could see a difference in practice, we are starting to get the balls, and you can see this so I think it all starts in practice. Sometimes the defense needs to pick up the offense, and other times vice versa and today the defense was forced to pick it up because the offense was struggling.”
-- Richmond DE Evan Kelly added about the defense
"Richmond is a very good team, and the bottom line is they beat us soundly today. Our defense played better than the score would indicate, but we hurt ourselves with turnovers and an inability to convert on third down. We turned the ball over on four straight possessions. When you do that against a team like Richmond, it is very difficult to have success."
-- Rhode Island head coach Jim Fleming’s thoughts about the Rams’ loss
