Spider Football Practice No. 4 Report

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders football team continued its quest for a 2014 CAA Championship on Thursday when the squad hit the field for its fourth practice of training camp.
The Spiders, practicing in helmets and shoulder pads for the second time, continued to install the 1st and 2nd down offense and defense, along with base fundamentals and techniques on a beautiful, 81-degree day in Richmond.
Practice Notes
- QB Michael Strauss began the first team session of the day sneaking the ball through the middle to find WR Rashad Ponder for approximate five yards.
- QB Michael Rocco did the same, stepping in with the 2’s, finding TE Christian Conklin cutting through the middle first his first of the day.
- Defensively, DL Winston Craig and DB David Jones had a great quarterback hurry to force Rocco’s first incompletion that got the defense roaring.
- The running backs continue to look sharp with the four Spiders – Seth Fisher, Jacobi Green, T.J. Moon and Jeremiah Hamlin – recording multiple runs down the middle for positive yards.
- DB David Jones picked up the first interception of the day, picking off Strauss towards the end of the second team session.
Post-Practice Quotes
“So far, so good for the most part. I think our team is fit and conditioned. They had a really good summer with that so we are about as healthy as we can hope to be at this stage moving into the heart of camp. We were in shells the last two days so we are four practices in. I feel like the recall is pretty good. This is a group of guys that can handle a lot of stuff so we are really throwing a lot at them. We are probably a little advanced as we have been in the past. We will put the pads on here tomorrow and pick up the tempo a little bit. All in all, we are about where we need to be.”
-- Head Coach Danny Rocco giving a camp update
“I think the defense did well today. Fourth day of practice, we are starting to come together as a team. The defense is playing together as a full 11 and three different units coming together as one team.”
-- DL Terrence Fullum on Thursday’s practice
“Offense is coming along well, definitely getting better every day and looking forward to getting the whole offense in. As a line, it’s going well. For me personally, its good because it’s been way too long.”
-- OL Nick Ritcher on the offense
