Thweatt Named Head Coach At Virginia State

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond Spiders assistant football coach Byron Thweatt has resigned his position to become the head coach at Virginia State on Thursday morning.
A native of Richmond, Thweatt served as an assistant coach for the Spiders for eight seasons, most recently as the inside linebackers coach as well as the Director of High School Relations.
“Coach Thweatt has done an outstanding job for us over the past eight years,” Richmond head coach Danny Rocco said. “Byron has been a very valuable member of my staff since my arrival in December of 2011. Byron will enjoy a great deal of success at Virginia State and we wish him and his family the very best with this opportunity.”
The past two seasons, Thweatt helped both LB Eric Wright and LB Aaron Roane establish themselves as two of the best linebackers in the CAA, earning all-league honors both years.
In 2012, Thweatt helped a pair of Spider linebackers earn All-CAA recognition - the first time that had happened since the 2009 season. Darius McMillan and Wright earned the accolades, but the whole unit was fantastic, helping Richmond lead the country in turnover margin at +22.
A national search for Thweatt’s replacement will begin immediately.
