The Game
The University of Richmond Spiders return to the FCS playoffs for the 10th time and second-straight year, to host the Tribe of William & Mary in the second round after receiving a first round bye. The winner of this game would face the winner of Western Illinois-Illinois State in the quarterfinals next weekend. Richmond is led by head coach Danny Rocco, who guided the team to the FCS Playoffs last season for the first time since 2009. The team defeated Morgan State, 46-24, in the first round of the playoffs before falling at No. 6 Coastal Carolina. Richmond completed October at 5-0 and Coach Rocco’s teams have gone 12-4 in that month. Rocco is 11-4 overall in November at Richmond.
Quick Slants
Jacobi Green recorded his fifth-straight 100-plus yard game, tallying 217 yards vs. William & Mary on Nov. 21. Green has 928 yards on 147 carries in those games, averaging 6.3 yards per carry.
He has crossed the 1,000-yard mark for the season with 1,285 on the year., which is fifth on the single-season rushing list. Green has six 100-plus yard games this season, the most by a Spider running back since Josh Vaughn had 10 in 2008.
WR Brian Brown finished the regular season with 1,180 yards, third on the single-season receiving list. He is also the first Richmond receiver to surpass 1,000 yards in a season twice.
Last Time Out
Richmond knocked off William and Mary 20-9 in the final game of the regular season, keeping the Capital Cup in Richmond and earning the automatic qualifier for the NCAA playoffs as the CAA champion. The Spiders stingy defense kept the Tribe out of the end zone and held the potent William and Mary offense to just 310 yards. Jacobi Green carried the Spiders to the win, with 217 yards on a career-high 36 carries. The performance was Green’s second 200-plus yard game, with the other coming against James Madison.
Playoff Record
The Spiders have an 11-8 mark all-time over nine appearances in the NCAA playoffs, with a perfect 4-0 in the 2008 National Championship season. Richmond was 1-1 in post-season play in bowl games as a Division I team, prior to becoming an FCS member. Richmond is 7-2 in its’ first game in NCAA playoff action, with all of those games coming in the first-round, and has won its’ last six opening playoff games. The Spiders received a first-round bye this season and had not received a bye, which was reinstituted in the 2010 season, in prior playoff appearances.
More On The Line
Since UR and W&M met for the first time as league opponents (in the current league affiliation) in 1993, this game has meant the difference for at least one team winning at least a share of the league title nine times. Last Saturday’s meeting was the 10th time that scenario had occured, and a Richmond win gave the Spiders a share of the title for the seventh time. The Spiders have six previous wins (1998, 2000, 2005, 2007, 2009, and 2012) in the series under that circumstance. This is the first time the two teams have met in a playoff format, and the first time they have met twice in a season since 1919.
