Offense Beats Defense In Annual Spring Football Game, 47-41

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond football team closed out the spring portion of its 2015 season with its annual Spring Game at Robins Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The offense won the 2015 spring game on a beautiful day at Robins Stadium, 47-41. The offense began the game with a 15-0 lead based on offseason competition.
“Overall I was pleased,” Richmond head coach Danny Rocco said following the game. “The offense came out and started the game with a real good-looking drive. I think we showed signs offensively of really good balance. I thought we ran the ball well today. I saw glimpses of what it needs to look like. I’m pleased with where we are. I’d like to be a little further along but at this point we can move forward and really compete.”
QB Kyle Lauletta led a pair of touchdown drives for the offense, completing 10-of-15 passes for 115 yards and one interception. The rising redshirt sophomore also rushed for a touchdown. QB David Broadus also had a solid game, completing 6-of-10 passes for 53 yards.
RB Gordon Collins ran for a game-high 48 yards on 10 carries for the offense, while RB Jacobi Green rushed for a score. RB Jeremiah Hamlin also played well, rushing for 30 yards on eight carries. WR Reggie Diggs caught a game-high six receptions for 71 yards to lead the wide receiving corps.
Defensively, DB Charles Mack had a game-high eight tackles including a pair of tackles for loss. DL Devin Cook, a transfer from Pitt, had a great Spider debut, totaling four tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack.
DB Brendan Coniker had two tackles and an interception, while both DL Winston Craig and LB Madison Day were each credited with a sack. DB David Jones and DL Andrew Clyde each had five tackles for the defense.
During halftime, Richmond head coach Danny Rocco handed out the Spring Awards. OL Thomas Evans received the Weight Room Champion, while OL Nicholas Vergos was named the Most Improved Offensive Player and LB Selton Hodge was honored as the Most Improved Defensive Player.
Also at halftime, Rocco named two captains coming out of spring ball for the 2015 season – OL Thomas Evans and LB Omar Howard. The team will have the opportunity to elect more team captains in the fall.
The Richmond Spiders football team will open the 2015 season on the road in College Park, Md. against Big Ten foe Maryland on September 5.
