The first game. It was played in Richmond, and the Spiders shutout the Tribe. But beyond that, details are sketchy. In fact, Richmond won the first four meetings in the series, three by shutout, outscoring the Tribe 107-11 in those four games between 1898 and 1903.
- Nov. 17, 1984 UR 33 WM 31
With a crowd of 21,484 fans at UR Stadium, the Spiders secured their first I-AA playoff berth. Richmond led 23-7 at halftime and 30-17 in the fourth quarter, but had to recover an on-side kick at the end to clinch the win. Greg Grooms rushed for 121 yards and two TDs and David Bayer scored two rushing touchdowns. The Spiders withstood an onslaught from the Tribe’s great quarterback, Stan Yagiello, who completed 31-43 passes for 305 yards and a touchdown. The win was the Spiders fifth straight. They beat Boston U. the next week for their first playoff win.
- Nov. 19, 1988 UR 24 WM 19
The Spiders trailed 16-7 early in the third quarter when Coach Dal Shealy surprised the 14,907 fans at cold, wet, dreary UR Stadium by inserting wide receiver Curtis Jefferson at quarterback. It surprised the W&M defense, too. On his second play, Jefferson ran 84 yards for a touchdown. Later he threw a 60 yard touchdown pass to Marvin Hargrove. Jefferson finished with 17 carries for 189 and a TD. The Spiders shocked the Tribe, 24-19. Richmond finished 4-7, William & Mary 7-4-1. It would be Shealy’s last game as Spider head coach.

D’Arcy Wills hit Ryan Tolhurst with a 22-yard touchdown pass on 4th and 8 with 1:38 to go, and then the Spider defense hung on. When the clock hit all zeroes, Hall of Fame broadcaster, the late Ray Tate, screamed with unbridled joy, “SPIDUHS WIN! SPIDUHS WIN IN WILLIAMSBURG!” The victory marked UR’s first win at William & Mary since 1973 – Ray’s last year as an assistant coach – a string of 12 games. The game also gave Richmond the conference championship and berth in the I-AA playoffs, where UR beat powerhouse Youngstown St in the first round, before losing at Montana. The Spiders finished 10-3.
- Nov. 17, 2007 UR 31 WM 20
The seventh-ranked Spiders earn their first-ever CAA Football Championship with a convincing win at UR Stadium. UR forced four turnovers, blocked a punt that was returned for a touchdown and Josh Vaughan posted then career-high rushing numbers with 28 carries for 132 yards and two touchdowns. The Spiders outgained the Tribe on the ground, 232-87. On defense, the Spiders finished the day with seven sacks and 12 tackles behind the line of scrimmage, totaling 65 lost yards. The victory was the sixth in a row for Coach Dave Clawson’s team, who extended the streak to eight with playoff victories over Eastern Kentucky and Wofford, before falling at Appalachian State in the national semifinals.

The Spiders led 20-0 at halftime, then withstood a furious Tribe rally. Josh Vaughan rushed for 134 yards and Richmond’s defense forced seven turnovers, including six interceptions – two by Justin Rogers. Still, the Spiders needed a blocked field goal by Sherman Logan on the Tribe’s first overtime possession and a 37 yard field goal by Andrew Howard in the extra session to seal UR’s fourth straight win over the Tribe. Richmond needed the victory to advance to the playoffs, which of course, started the run to the national championship.

Andrew Howard drilled a 48-yard field goal as time expired to lift No. 4 Richmond past No. 5 William & Mary, 13-10, in the Spiders’ final regular season game ever at UR Stadium before a crowd of 17,527. The victory gave the Spiders their first 10-win regular season in school history. Future Hall of Fame QB Eric Ward, the game MVP, was 24-of-36 passing for 221 yards and put the Spiders in position for the win with a three-play drive that covered 22 yards in 14 seconds. It was the eighth time in his All-American career that he engineered a winning or tying drive in the fourth quarter. Ward improved to 4-0 in his career versus the Tribe. Justin Rogers set up the dramatic finish when he picked off a pass at the Richmond 36-yard line with 14 seconds left. Ward then completed an 18-yarder to Kevin Grayson. Richmond killed the clock with two seconds left, setting the stage for Howard. The Spider defense held the Tribe to a season-low in points, and the league’s leading rusher, Jonathan Grimes, to just 41 yards on 13 carries. The CAA Football Champion Spiders finished 11-2.
