Rocco Named Coach of the Year by TD Club of Richmond

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Add another Coach of the Year award to Danny Rocco’s office.
The Spiders’ leader was named the Bobby Ross Coach of the Year, the top Division I coach in the Commonwealth of Virginia, by the Touchdown Club of Richmond on Monday.
This is the second time Rocco has won the award, also taking home the honors after the 2012 season in which Richmond went 8-3 and won a share of the CAA title.
Rocco, who was also named the CAA Coach of the Year in November, guided Richmond to 10 victories, a conference title and a FCS semifinal appearance. The 10 victories marked the fifth time in program history that the Spiders reached double-digits in wins.
The Spiders had four student-athletes earn All-American accolades this past year and 13 earn All-Conference honors, including seven on the first team.
During Rocco’s tenure, the Spiders have piled up 33 wins, the highest total in the first four years of any head coaching tenure in school history.
The Touchdown Club NCAA Division I Coach of the Year Award, being awarded to Rocco, is named for Richmond native Bobby Ross, whose 18 year collegiate head coaching career was highlighted by a National Championship 25 years ago with Georgia Tech in 1990, followed by a successful nine year NFL head coaching career reaching the Super Bowl with the San Diego Chargers following the 1994 season.
Rocco will be honored at the 53rd Annual All-Metro Football Banquet on Thursday, January 21, at the Hilton Hotel in Richmond. In addition to these two honorees, the banquet will also salute the high school All-Metro Football team as selected by the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the high school coaches of the year as selected by the Touchdown Club, and the high school team Sportsmanship Awards as selected by the Central Virginia Football Officials Association. The banquet is organized by the Touchdown Club of Richmond.
The banquet, which will be attended by more than 500 people, is open to the public and will be held at the Hilton Richmond Hotel, 12042 West Broad Street, in Short Pump, a Richmond suburb. Tickets cost $40.00 and may be purchased by contacting Ron Axselle, 804.740.7055, coachax@verizon.net.
