Vergos, Rubin Join Coach Rocco For Tuesday's Sportsline
Redshirt senior center Nick Vergos and sophomore linebacker Justin Rubin will join Coach Danny Rocco for lunch and college football talk on Tuesday's Spider Sportsline at Outback Steakhouse, 7917 W. Broad St. The popular radio show airs live from noon-1pm during the college football season on ESPN 950, SPORTSFM 100.5, espn950am.com and RichmondSpiders.com, as well as on tablets and mobile devices.
Vergos is the workhorse of a veteran Spider offensive line with 27 consecutive games started. He has started 32 of 37 games played in his career. In the CAA, the Richmond offense is second in scoring (30.4 ppg), first in passing (281.6 ypg) and second in total offense (422.6 ypg).
Rubin set the tone for the Spider defense in Saturday's blanking of Villanova, intercepting a pass on the Wildcats' first possession. It was his second career interception. He later recovered a fumble on a muffed punt, while being credited with four tackles and a pass breakup. The Spider defense has posted two shutouts this season for the first time since 2002. It was also the first time Villanova had been shutout since 2004, a span of 148 consecutive games.
Coach Rocco, host Bob Black and their player guests will review the impressive 23-0 victory over then No. 13 Villanova and preview this Saturday's road game at Elon (2-4; 1-2 CAA). The Phoenix were off last weekend, making them the third Spider opponent in the past four weeks to be coming off a bye.
