QUICK SLANTS
- Richmond hits the road for the third time this season to take on yet another nationally-ranked opponent. The Spiders currently have four nationally-ranked opponents on their schedule this fall.
- The Spiders’ final six opponents are a combined 16-5 so far this year, which is tied for the toughest future schedule in the country with Northern Iowa.
- Today’s matchup marks the fourth straight year these two programs have squared off with the Spiders pulling out a win in the previous three meetings, including a 38-31 barnburner in Richmond last year.
- In last year’s Spiders’ win over the Great Danes, current senior David Jones set a CAA record with four interceptions.
- The two men in charge of these programs have a long history as Coach Rocco served as Coach Gattuso’s host during his recruiting visit to Penn State when they were both players for the Nittany Lions (Rocco then transferred to Wake Forest to finish his collegiate career).
- The Spiders have won 16 of their past 22 CAA contests dating back to the 2013 season.
- Since joining the league in 2007, the Spiders are one of just four programs to win 45 or more conference games over that stretch, along with UNH, Villanova and JMU.
- Richmond will look to continue its impressive offensive output when it takes on Albany, the CAA’s top scoring defense (15.0 ppg). The Spiders have posted 30 or more points in four of the five games this season and rank second in the league with 30.8 ppg.
- With a 23-carry, 128-yard performance, freshman Xavier Goodall became the first freshman since 1991 and just the third freshman all-time to have back-to-back consecutive 100-plus yard performances.
- Behind 233 yards and three touchdowns in Richmond’s win over Towson last Saturday, Kyle Lauletta became just the sixth player in program history to toss for over 5,000 yards. He currently ranks second in the country and tops in the CAA with 1,504 yards this year.
- Richmond’s defense ranks among the best in the country, allowing just 276.2 yards per game, ninth-best nationally. The Spiders currently rank first in the country in passing yards allowed per game, allowing just 125.4 per outing.
- Today’s meeting will be the 21st meeting against a nationally-ranked opponent during the Coach Rocco era. The Spiders are 12-8 in the previous 20 matchups. Entering today, Richmond has won six of its past seven meetings with nationally-ranked opponents, including four straight regular season contests. Every CAA team that has been ranked at one point this season is on the Spiders’ schedule this fall.
