Spiders Earn Third Consecutive FCS Playoff Berth

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – When you accomplish something that has only happened twice in 133 years, it’s pretty special.
That’s exactly what this year’s Richmond football team did when the Spiders earned a third consecutive FCS Playoffs after an 8-3 regular season. Richmond will host the Aggies of North Carolina A&T on Saturday, November 26 at Robins Stadium. Official game time will be released later today.
This will be the 11th FCS playoff appearance for the Spiders, seven of which have come in the past 12 seasons. That mark is the eighth-most nationally over that span.
“I’m really proud of this team and reaching this goal of a third straight playoff berth,” Head Coach Danny Rocco said. “This group has been through a lot of adversity and through it all, they came together and earned the right to start a new season. We’re excited for this opportunity.”
Richmond battled adversity all year long, facing 12 season-ending injuries, including five defensive starters and three offensive starters.
Offensively, the Spiders are led by senior All-American candidate Brian Brown, who ranks in the top-five nationally in every receiving category and earlier this season became just the second player in the CAA history to post three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons.
Redshirt freshman Deontez Thompson stepped into the starting RB role four games into the season and posted five 100-yard performances in the final six games of the regular season, including a career-high 144 yards in the finale against William & Mary.
Defensively, All-American candidate Winston Craig led the CAA in sacks with a career-high 7.5 sacks and helped the Spiders rank in the top-five nationally in pass defense.
