Spider Spring Football: Day 3 ? Strapping On The Pads

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – On a beautiful Tuesday afternoon, the University of Richmond football team took the field at Robins Stadium for the third practice of the spring, but this time was a little different.
For the first time this spring, the Spiders strapped on the pads and got at it with plenty of energy. Tuesday’s practice continued the installation of new terminology and play sets, along with plenty of reps for youngsters looking to move up the depth chart this upcoming fall.
Along with individual position workouts and drills, the Spiders worked on first and second down play calls, along with some seven-on-seven drills to fine tune techniques and skills.
Richmond will be back on the field on Thursday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
Receiving Core Looks Strong
Led by All-American Brian Brown (76 receptions, 1,450 yards and six TDs), Richmond’s receiving core is one of the strongest areas returning for the Spiders next fall.
Twelve different players who made receptions in 2015 will return this fall with over 65-percent of the Spiders’ receiving yards returning as well.
Along with Brown, rising junior Porter Abell and sophomores Tyler Wilkins and Jarmal Bevels all have had strong starts to the spring season.
Redshirt freshman Gershom Ejoni gives the Spiders a big body on the outside along with plenty of depth, along with rising sophomore Tafon Mainsah, who is recovering from an offseason injury this spring.
Clyde Looking To Build On Strong Season
In just his first season in the Richmond uniform, Andrew Clyde put together an outstanding fall, leading the team with six sacks and 8.5 tackles for a loss, to go along with 56 total tackles.
Clyde is off to a strong start this spring under new defensive coordinator Chris Cosh and is looking to continue to improve.
“I have some personal and individual goals like double-digit sacks, but our main focus defensively is to continue to build on last year and really improve as a unit as a whole,” Clyde said.
