QUICK SLANTS
- Richmond enters CAA play with its first 2-0 start since 2011 after a dominating defensive performance last Saturday in a 34-0 victory over in-state foe Norfolk State.
- In Richmond’s win over NSU, the Spiders held the Spartans to just 122 yards of total offense, the lowest output by an opponent since Richmond held Delaware to just 53 total yards on Nov. 15, 2008, that’s a span of 93 games.
- Richmond held NSU to just 46 yards passing, which is the fewest since Oct. 1, 2011 at JMU (a span of 51 games), when the Dukes threw for just 34 yards.
- Thanks to a career-high nine tackles, 2.5 of them for a loss and a sack, junior defensive end Brandon Waller was named CAA Defensive Player of the Week.
- The Spiders have gotten used to playing in front as they have trailed for just 66:26 of the past 360 minutes (six games) dating back to last year (81.5-percent). Richmond has yet to trail in 2016.
- Richmond’s defensive unit has been stellar through the first two games, allowing just 212 yards per game, which rank in the top-10 nationally. The 424 total yards in two games is the fewest in a two-game span since 2014 (10/25/14 and 11/1/14), a span of 22 games.
- The Spiders begins its quest for a fifth CAA championship after bringing home the 2015 trophy with a 6-2 mark in league play. Richmond’s four CAA championships since 2007 is the most by any program over that stretch.
- Since joining the league in 2007, the Spiders are one of just four programs to win 45 or more conference games over that stretch, along with UNH, Villanova and JMU.
- Today’s meeting is the third all-time and just the second CAA meeting between the two programs. The only other conference meeting came in 2013 when the Spiders pulled out a 39-31 victory over the Seawolves in Richmond.
- With the 2-0 start, the Spiders are #2 nationally for the second straight week. Its the highest mark since Richmond was ranked #1 entering the 2009 season, following the 2008 National Championship.
