QUICK SLANTS
- Richmond returns to Robins Stadium for its final regular season non-conference match-up of 2016 when the nationally-ranked Colgate Raiders come to town. Entering today’s contest, the Spiders have won 17 consecutive non-conference home games dating back to the 2004 season. (6-0 under Rocco, 10-0 in Robins Stadium)
- In his four-plus seasons in Richmond, the Spiders have shown bounce back ability under Head Coach Danny Rocco. Richmond is 11-7 following losses under the current regime.
- Tonight’s matchup marks the 24th sellout in the six-plus year history of Robins Stadium. The Spiders are 28-10 (.737) here at the stadium. During Coach Rocco’s four-plus seasons, Richmond is 22-5 (.815) inside the friendly confines.
- Richmond enters today’s matchup against Norfolk State having won eight straight games at Robins Stadium after posting a perfect 6-0 mark in 2015. The longest consecutive home winning streak in program history is nine, which has been accomplished three times (1918-20, 1968-70, 1984-86).
- Last year’s unblemished mark at home was the eighth time in 132 seasons of Richmond football that the Spiders went undefeated at home. (1943, 1968, 1969, 1973, 1985, 1995, 2007, 2015)
- While the Spiders and Raiders haven’t faced off in nearly 20 years, Colgate is no stranger to the CAA after picking up huge road wins at New Hampshire and at James Madison in the FCS playoff last season to earn a spot in the quarterfinals, the second-best finish in their program’s history.
- Senior WR and Richmond native Brian Brown is on the cusp of program history, needing just 72 yards to become the school’s all-time leader in career receiving yards. With his nine-catch, 153-yard performance at Stony Brook last weekend, Brown became just the second player in the 133-year history of the program to reach 3,000 career receiving yards. (currently at 3,030).
- Brown’s pass-and-catch partner Kyle Lauletta enters today’s game just 330 yards away from becoming the sixth player in program history to reach 5,000 career passing yards. Lauletta and Brown would become the first 5,000-yard passing and 3,000-yard receiving duo to reach that milestone in the same season.
- The Richmond coaching staff are wearing shoulder patches to raise awareness for the Coach to Cure MD charity, to help raise awareness and research funding to cure Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, which is a project that the AFCA has taken on for nine years.
- Coach Rocco has certainly talked about this year’s team being battle tested and the Spiders will need it as they have the second toughest FCS schedule in the country according to NCAA stats. The cumulative winning percentage of all the Spider opponents in 2016 is currently 13-3, which is second only to Northern Iowa. Richmond will play all five of the other nationally-ranked CAA squads this year.
- With his 14th career 100-plus yard this past weekend at Stony Brook, Brian Brown extended his program to three more than any other receiver in school history. The only other two players in program history to have double-digit 100-plus yard performances are Leland Melvin (1982-85) and Walker Gillette (1967-69), who both had 11 during their time as a Spider.
