Evan Leach
- Title:
- Volunteer Assistant Coach
Evan Leach joins the Richmond staff as a volunteer coach after competing as a graduate student for the Spiders last year during the 2022-2023 school year. Evan served as an Assistant Track & Field Coach at Glen Allen High School in Henrico, Virginia, from 2022 to 2023.Â
During his two-year tenure, he played a crucial role in mentoring and guiding young athletes, helping them excel in track and field. Working primarily with the boy’s and girl’s sprint and relay groups, he helped Glen Allen reach success at the state and national levels. The boy’s team finished second at the VHSL 5A Indoor Track & Field State Championships in 2022 and 2023. They also finished runner-up at the 2022 VHSL 5A Outdoor Track & Field State Championships.Â
After three straight runner-up finishes on the girl’s side, Glen Allen would go on to win the team title at the 2023 VHSL 5A Outdoor Track & Field State Championships. At the state championships, Evan has guided two different athletes to 2nd place finishes in the 400m (Kody Ellen ‘22, Marquis Belle ‘23), as well as another runner-up finish in the 4x400m relay.Â
As a student-athlete, he’s a two-time Collegiate Running Association All-American placing fourth in the 2023 Collegiate 10K Road Race National Championships and ninth in the 2022 Collegiate 10K Road Race National Championship held within the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10K in Richmond, Virginia.
As a Spider, during the 2022-23 season, Evan participated in four cross country races and further demonstrated his talent by qualifying for the IC4A Indoor Track & Field Championships in the 5,000M where he ran a personal best of 14:48.61 in Boston. He followed this up with his fourth place finish in the Collegiate 10K Road Race Championship in Richmond.Â
During his time at Virginia Commonwealth University, Evan was not only a dedicated athlete but also a leader. He was a member and captain of the VCU Cross Country and Track and Field Teams. His commitment to excellence extended to academics as well, earning him a place on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll.
Evan's determination and passion for both athletics and coaching are evident in his background. He is a son of Kelly Duke and the late Geoff Leach, and he has three siblings: Emma Leach, Chris Duke, and Courtney Graves. His interests include metal detecting, snowboarding, and spending time with his dog, Sage. He aspires to continue his impact on the world of track and field as a collegiate cross country and track coach, helping future athletes achieve their full potential.
