Chris Jones is in his 23st year in the University of Richmond Athletic Department. Jones has served as the Head Football Athletic Trainer from 2002 to 2018. Jones has served as Director of Sports Medicine from 2006 to 2012, Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine from 2012-2018. In January of 2018, Jones began in his current position of Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine and Student-Athlete Welfare. In this position, Jones works as part of the Spider Performance and Development Program to collaborate a multidisciplinary, athlete-centered approach to Sports Performance, Athletic Healthcare, and Well-Being through the Spiders Sports Performance and Well Being Team comprised of Sports Medicine, Strength & Conditioning, Sports Nutrition, Leadership / Development and Sports Psychology. He also has served as a preceptor for multiple athletic training education programs and serves as UR’s NCAA Healthcare Administrator.
Previous to joining the UR Sports Medicine Staff, Jones served as the Head Football Athletic Trainer at the University of Findlay in 2002. He also had the opportunity to serve as Seasonal Assistant Athletic Trainer for the New York Jets from 2000 to 2001, after completing his graduate assistantship. While performing his graduate work for the University of Delaware, Jones severed as a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer at Villanova University, where he worked primarily with the Wildcat Football and Baseball Teams. He also has experience in Major League Baseball, where he completed an athletic training internship with the Philadelphia Phillies in the summer of 1999 through the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society. Jones completed his undergraduate degree at Ursinus College in 1998 where he was a four-year letter winner in baseball.
Jones is NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and has completed USA Weightlifting Olympic Club Coach Course. He has completed advanced training in soft tissue mobilization through Active Release Technique and Graston Technique Courses and concussion management through becoming an ImPACT Trained Athletic Trainer (ITAT). He has completed Mental Health First Aid Certification. Jones is an American Health & Safety Institute CPR and First Aid Instructor. He is licensed to practice athletic training through the Virginia Board of Medicine.
He has served Virginia Athletic Trainers’ Association President-Elect from 2019-20, President from 2020-21, and Past-President from 2022-23. He has previously served on the NCAA focus group on excess insurance in intercollegiate athletics and the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Most Distinguished Athletic Training Award Committee. He took part in the 2nd Annual NCAA safety in College Football Summit. He has presented at multiple state and national conferences on various Sports Medicine topics. He was awarded the University of Richmond Distinguished Service Award in 2022
Jones and his wife, the former Bethann Fallo, reside in Glen Allen, VA with their two children, Maia and Henry.
