Trevor Mendelson is in his first season as an assistant coach for head coach Russ Huesman in spring of 2021 and will work directly with the tight ends group. Mendelson comes to Richmond after spending the past two years on the staff of former Spider head coach Dave Clawson at Wake Forest. He spent his time in Winston-Salem as an offensive graduate assistant on the staff and was the assistant offensive line coach.
Over the past two years, the Demon Deacons have won 15 games and appeared in back-to-back bowl games in the Pinstripe Bowl (2019) and Birmingham Bowl (2018). Last season, Wake Forest posted an 8-5 overall record and finished tied for first in the Atlantic Coast Conference in passing yards per game at 288.3. The Demon Deacons were also fifth overall in the league in team scoring, averaging 31.8 points per game.
Mendelson helped the Wake Forest offensive line pick up four All-Conference honors in the ACC. Justin Herron and Nate Gilliam earned Third Team All-ACC while Jake Benzinger and Zach Tom were named Honorable Mention All-ACC.
Mendelson was a three-year letterwinner at Marshall as an offensive lineman for the Thundering Herd from 2010-14. He started 12 games as a senior and helped Marshall to the Conference USA Championship and a win in the Boca Raton Bowl. Mendelson was named to the Conference USA All-Academic team and was Marshall’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2014.
Mendelson served as a graduate assistant coach from 2015-16 with his alma mater under Doc Holliday, helping the Thundering Herd to a 10-3 overall record and a St. Petersburg Bowl appearance. He joined the coaching staff at Glenville State in West Virginia the following season, where he served as offensive line coach and run game coordinator. He coached Caleb Doak to Second Team All-MEC honors.
A native of Dublin, Ohio, Mendelson is a graduate of Jerome High School where he was an All-Conference and All-Metro selection.
Mendelson graduated from Marshall in 2013 with a bachelor of science degree in finance and economics and earned his Master’s of Business Administration from Marshall in 2015. He is married to the former Erica Downard.
