Tanner Biagini enters his fourth season as the Richmond volunteer assistant coach in 2015. Biagini will continue to serve as the first base coach for the Spiders, as well as working with the catchers and hitters.
With Biagini's help in 2014, Richmond led the A-10 in home runs in 2014 with 36 and also ranked in the top-five in the league in slugging percentage, runs, RBI, doubles, walks and total bases. Individually, senior C Cory Moheit had his best season under Biagini in 2014, hitting .308 with five doubles, three home runs and 17 RBI.
In 2012, Biagini helped catcher Chris Cowell post one of the most impressive offensive seasons in Richmond history. Cowell was selected as the First-Team All-Atlantic 10 catcher and earned First-Team All-East region honors. He hit .271 on the season and led the conference with 20 home runs, which ranked second in the country. He also had a team-best 18 doubles and drove in 58 runs.
Biagini came to Richmond after a very successful collegiate playing career at VMI and a two-year stint playing professionally. A four-year starter at VMI, Biagini posted a career batting average of .303, including a .343 average during his sophomore season. After his breakout 2008, Biagini was named First-Team All-State and left the Keydets with the ninth most doubles in school history (39).
The son of former Major League hitting coach and minor league manager, Greg Biagini, Tanner had a standout career at D.H. Conley High School in Greenville, North Carolina, helping lead the team to back-to-back state championships in 2005 and 2006.
Following his prep career, Biagini was drafted in the 48th round of the2006 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Instead of signing, Biagini went on to play for the Keydets and after his junior season, was drafted in the 50th round of the 2009 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics. Biagini chose to come back to VMI for his senior season. Unfortunately, his year was cut short by injury, but not before the senior hit .288 with a quartet of home runs and added nine doubles to his resume as well.
After concluding his collegiate career at VMI, Biagini signed a free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Rays. Biagini went on to play two season of professional ball, with the GCL Rays in 2010 and the Hudson Valley Renegades in 2011.
Biagini graduated from VMI in 2010 with a degree in psychology. He is currently pursuing his master's degree in psychology.
