Marty Beall was announced as head coach of the University of Richmond women’s soccer program in December 2017. Beall is just the second head coach in the program’s history, and brings a wealth of coaching experience to the Spider Soccer sideline. Beall enters his fifth season as head coach in 2022.
In the fall of 2021, Beall coached the Spiders to their first Atlantic 10 Tournament appearance in seven years. Richmond finished the season with the program's most conference wins since 2011, and all five of those wins came by way of a shutout, which is also the most conference shutouts since 2011.
Beall helped the Spiders to a turnaround season in 2019 with a 7-9-2 record, which was a five-win improvement from the previous season. Also, in 2019, Beall was instrumental in getting a new home for Spider Soccer at the President’s Field at River Road that features a natural grass field, new scoreboard, spectator benches, Spider-branded tents and windscreens to make it a home field atmosphere. The Spiders went 5-3 at River Road earning more home wins since 2016.
Beall coached Redshirt junior Alyssa Walker to a career-best 11 goals, leading to an Atlantic 10 Second Team All-Conference selection. Beall helped the Spider offense scored 25 goals in the 2019 season more than doubling their output (14 more goals) from 2018. The defense was also much improved cutting the goals against in half, including five shutouts.
Beall’s freshmen class quickly made an impact in 2019 as seven earned starts, including four being in the top 10 on the team in minutes played. The Spiders finished with a 4-6 A-10 record, their best mark since 2016 and picked up three shutouts, including one over crosstown rival VCU.
Off the field, the Spiders have excelled in the classroom and junior TJ Anderson was rewarded with a 2019 All-Academic team selection, becoming the first Spider to be honored in six seasons.
Beall spent the last nine seasons as the head coach at High Point. During his tenure at HPU, he led the Panthers to 95 wins, including a 57-20-11 record in Big South play. He holds the HPU all-time program records for overall wins and conference wins and is a two-time Big South Coach of the Year selection.
While at High Point, he led the Panthers to four regular season championships – including back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017 – four conference tournament championships and four NCAA tournament appearances. Forty-four players earned All-Big South honors in Beall’s nine seasons, including 22 first-team selections.
Beall’s teams have also succeeded off the field, with three HPU Student-Athletes earning Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors under his leadership.
Beall came to HPU after coaching for 10 seasons at Francis Marion, including six seasons as the head coach. While at FMU, Beall helped transition the Patriot program from the Division II level to Division I. Beall owned a 56-44-7 record, ranking second in program history, as FMU head coach while consistently scheduling nationally and regionally-recognized programs.
During his tenure at Francis Marion, Beall guided the Patriots to four double-digit win totals and four winning seasons. Under his tutelage four players developed into National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Region performers including a pair of first-team selections. Beall’s pupils also garnered NSCAA/adidas All-America and Division I All-Independent team accolades. In 2004, Beall was named Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year after guiding the Patriots to an undefeated regular season championship.
Prior to becoming the Patriots’ head coach in 2003, Beall served four seasons at FMU as an assistant coach, and helped lead FMU to one of its two NCAA Division II national tournament appearances in 2000. In 2001, he led the Patriots to their first ever Peach Belt Conference Tournament title.
Before joining the Francis Marion program, Beall spent two seasons (1997-98) as the women’s assistant coach at the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore, Md. In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Beall has also coached at the youth league, high school and club level, serving as the Director of Coaching for the Florence Soccer Association and the Assistant Director of Coaching for Piedmont Triad FC. He was also the head coach of the South Carolina and North Carolina girls ODP staff for 14 years.
