RICHMOND, Va. – Head Coach Adam Denton has added Jesse Newton to the women's soccer coaching staff ahead of the 2026 fall season, Denton announced Wednesday.
Newton, a St. Petersburg, Florida native, joins the Spiders as an assistant coach with experience across the collegiate, youth and international levels, including recent work as an assistant coach and director of player development at Oakland University.
"We're excited to welcome Jesse to the Spider family," Denton said. "From the very beginning of the interview process, it was clear that she would be a great addition to our staff. Jesse is passionate, hardworking, detail-oriented and has a strong understanding of the challenges student-athletes face at a high-academic institution like Richmond. She is committed to developing our student-athletes not only as players, but more importantly as people. Jesse's experience as both a player and a coach will be a tremendous asset to our program, and she will be involved in all aspects of the team, including individual player development, recruiting, scouting and training curriculum. Go Spiders!"
At Oakland, Newton played a key role in the program's on-field and off-field development, assisting with recruiting, training sessions and match preparation while designing individualized development plans for players. She also oversaw video analysis and contributed to a turnaround that saw the program improve its conference standing and reach the Horizon League semifinals.
Prior to her time at Oakland, Newton served as a graduate assistant coach at Lynn University and has remained active in the youth soccer landscape as a coach with Michigan Jaguars FC and the Olympic Development Program East Region.
"I'm incredibly honored and excited to join the University of Richmond women's soccer coaching staff," Newton said. "Coach Denton and his staff have built something special, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it. With his experience, competitive mindset and leadership, this program is continuing to grow toward a championship level. I'm beyond excited to bring my energy, passion and experience to Richmond and get to work."
Newton's playing career spans multiple levels, beginning at IMG Academy before a standout four-year career at Presbyterian College. She used her fifth year of eligibility at Lynn University while completing her master's degree, then went on to compete professionally with MSV Duisburg in Germany, where she appeared in 14 matches and added two assists as a defender during the 2023-24 season.
While overseas, Newton also gained coaching experience with MSV Duisburg's U15 squad, helping guide the team to a league championship while contributing to training sessions and match preparation.
Newton holds a bachelor's degree in history from Presbyterian College and earned her MBA from Lynn University. She also holds a U.S. Soccer Federation "D" License and is currently pursuing her "C" License.
