PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The University of Richmond women's soccer team received a first half goal from sophomore forward Anne Rieser (Middletown, Md./Middletown) en route to a 1-0 victory over Pittsburgh in the Spiders season-opener at Morton Sports Complex in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Panthers dropped to 1-1 on the campaign.
Rieser, a medical redshirt as a freshman, made her first collegiate appearance and scored her first collegiate goal at 26:11 to account for the match's only scoring off of a "double assist" from senior defender Courtney Ficken (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) and sophomore midfielder Jenna Merriam (Vorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional). Richmond controlled the tempo of the match throughout, out-shooting Pittsburgh 29-11, including 18-4 in the opening half. Senior forward Brooke Sands (Dallas, Texas/Dallas Episcopal) led the Spiders with nine shots on goal. In addition, junior goalkeeper Kristen Samuhel (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) collected seven saves to post her 19th career shutout.
Richmond will resume action on Friday, September 1, visiting UNC Greensboro at 7 p.m.
