RICHMOND, Va. - University of Richmond senior forward Brooke Sands (Dallas, Texas/Dallas Episcopal) scored two goals and had two assists and sophomore midfielder Jenna Merriam (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) found the back of the net twice to power the Spiders to a 5-1 victory over West Virginia in NCAA Tournament first round action at UR Soccer Complex this evening on the campus of the University of Richmond.
The Spiders, who own a program best-ever 13-6-0 record, advance to face fourth-seeded and 21-1-0 Nebraska in second round action in Lincoln, Neb. on Saturday, November 11 at 7 p.m. at Abbott Sports Complex. Meanwhile, the Mountaineers conclude the season with a 15-6-0 overall mark.
Merriam delivered the first of Richmond's season-high five goals at the 15:40 mark, drilling in a Sands crossing pass. Junior forward Laura Gincel (Princeton, N.J./West Windsor) also assisted on the game-winner. On Richmond's second goal, Sands was the recipient of Merriam's solid playmaking, blasting in a 30-yard shot just inside the far post at 21:24. The Spiders extended its lead to 3-0 when Merriam scored from ten yards out off of an assist from freshman back Edda Gardarsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Briedholti). Richmond owned a 4-0 halftime advantage when Sands controlled a long through ball from junior midfielder Meredith Johnson (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton), extended West Virginia sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Kaire (four saves) and deposited her team-leading 22nd point of the campaign. The Spiders scored on four of its first six shots on goals. Sands is also the program's all-time leader in career goals (51) and points (124).
West Virginia got on the board at the 56:36 mark. Mountaineer freshman midfielder Jenn Lewis chipped in a five-yard shot on a play orchestrated by sophomore midfielder Rachel Kruze. But Richmond countered as Sands accounted for her sixth point of the contest at 65:40, sending a perfect crossing pass to freshman midfielder Molly Rettig (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin), who dented the back of the net from the top of the penalty area.
"What can I say about this Richmond team?" commented Spiders head coach Peter Albright. "Tonight, our players were just remarkable. We work on setting the tone for matches and tonight we did that very well. We were able to use our speed to our advantage against a very good West Virginia team tonight. I am so proud of our group and what they have been able to accomplish. I hope that we can keep it going."
