RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond's offense held the ball for nearly 38 minutes and the defense allowed just 129 yards of total offense as the Spiders prevailed 10-7 in the season opener vs. Bucknell at UR Stadium.
The Spiders moved the ball well on their first possession, driving to the Bucknell six. But a missed field goal kept Richmond off the scoreboard. The Bison blocked a Spider punt late in the first period and took possession on the Richmond 16. The Spider defense held ground as Bucknell missed a 39-yard field goal attempt.
Richmond fumbled on its next possession and the Bison had the ball on the Spider 14. Bucknell moved down to the one-yard line, but could not get into the end zone. The Bison missed a 21-yard field goal attempt and the game remained scoreless. Richmond had another punt blocked late in the second period, giving Bucknell the ball on the Spider 23-yard line. Senior fullback Jason Marrow rumbled in from nine yards out and the Bison led 7-0 at the half.
The Spiders found the end zone late in the third quarter as junior quarterback Sean Gustus ran 58 yards for Richmond's first score of the afternoon. That touchdown tied the game at 7-7 with 3:35 remaining in the third period. The teams then exchanged four punts and Bucknell took over on its own 29-yard line with 9:52 remaining in the contest.
On the first play of the drive, sophomore linebacker Mark Thompson forced a fumble and senior defensive back Harold Hill recovered on the Bucknell 27. The Spiders moved the ball to the 19, where sophomore Doug Kirchner connected on a 36-yard field goal to give Richmond a 10-7 advantage. The Bison then moved the ball to the Richmond 47, but were forced to punt and pinned the Spiders on their own five-yard line with 4:09 to go. Richmond picked up one first down, then punted and game Bucknell the ball on its 41 with 1:17 remaining. On the first play of the drive, senior linebacker Marcus Neal recovered a fumble following a completed pass and sealed the win for the Spiders.
