Men's Golf 2001 Spring Outlook
01/12/2001 | Men's Golf
Blending a corps of veterans with a talented cast of underclassmen, the University of Richmond men's golf team should remain competitive both at the regional and national levels this spring. The Spiders had at least one player finish among the top-20 finishers in four of its five fall tournaments.
Following a tournament victory and a team-best 73.2 stroke average, senior co-captain Joe Horowitz (Long Beach, N.Y.)returns to bolster the Spiders in the spring. One of the Spiders most consistent players, Horowitz was the tournament medalist at this fall's Liberty/JAE Classic, firing a program 36-hole record of six-under-par 138. He carded a final round four-under-par 68 to pace the Spiders to the tournament title.
Sophomore Steve Lessing (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Sring Harbor) will again be counted on to stabilize Richmond following two top-10 finishes in the fall. He ranked second among team leaders in stroke average (74.0) and was the team's medalist at the Navy Fall Classic, claimed by the Spiders.
Also adding depth and experience will be senior Bryan Stark (Herndon, Va./Herndon), who notched two top-15 finishes during the fall. He fired a final round one-under-par 70 at the Navy Fall Classic to tie for third place with Lessing.
After missing most of the fall campaign following rotator cuff surgery, the Spiders are hopeful that junior Ryan McLain (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) can return to the form which saw him rank second among team stroke average leaders last spring. Fellow junior Mark DiGiacomo (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon Catholic) could become a regular in the lineup as well. He shot a collegiate competitive-best one-under-par 70 during the fall campaign.
Also battling for tournament time will be the sophomore trio of Myke Cohn (Bethesda, Md/Landon School), Joe Cunningham (Manchester, Mass.) and Kyle Hess (Buffalo, N.Y./Nichols School) as well as junior Wes Turiano (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg).
