MIDLOTHIAN, Va. — The Richmond Spiders rallied to a fourth-place finish in the inaugural Giles-Spratley Collegiate Tuesday at Independence Golf Club. The three teams to finish in front of the host Spiders in the field of 16 are all ranked in the top 80 of the D-I rankings: No. 77 Liberty (-11), No. 55 Florida Gulf Coast University (-16), and No. 51 Charleston (-29). The Spiders finished at 9-under par (855) to record their fourth top-five finish in five events this spring.
"This was a really strong mid-major field," said Spiders coach Adam Decker. "For us, it's great prep going into our conference championship. That was a good, competitive last round we played. I think it's all positive and really good preparation for what's to come."
Richmond was led by junior Quin Polin, who fired a 4-under 68 in the final round to finish at 6-under par (210), tied for sixth in the field of 84. It was Polin's fourth top-10 finish of the season and the seventh of his career.
"It was a very nice experience coming out here and seeing all the supporters of Richmond golf and seeing the flags hanging for the Spiders on people's houses and whatnot," said Polin. "It was a lot of fun playing here at home."
Junior Jack LaPiana also finished in the top 10, tying for ninth at 4-under par (212). It was his second top-10 finish of the season and his first since tying for sixth at the Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational in September.
"It was a blast," said LaPiana. "We had a ton of support - a bunch of alumni, alumni parents, friends, family, it was great."
Sophomore Carson Baez tied for 27th at 1-over par (217) after a 2-over 74 in Round 3 Tuesday.
Richmond's team lineup was rounded out by junior Parker Moellinger, who tied for 42nd at 3-over par (219), and freshman Lucas Rizo-Patron, who tied for 45th at 4-over par (220). Rizo-Patron moved up 18 spots on the individual leaderboard Tuesday with a 1-under 71.
Three Spiders competed as individuals at the event. Senior Drew Carlin tied for 65th at 9-over par (225) and sophomores Tommy Sharps and Tyler Lee tied for 82nd at 22-over par (238).
Competing at their home course for the first time since 2021, Richmond feasted on the par 5s during the 54-hole event, playing them in a combined 29-under par, second best of any team.
Up next for the Spiders is the 2026 Atlantic 10 Championship at Evermore Resort in Orlando, Fla. from April 27-29.
"For us now the focus becomes Florida," said Decker. "They all realize there's a lot of work to be done. We've got a couple weeks here before we head down there to prepare and I think they're up for the challenge."
