RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Richmond celebrated homecoming with a convincing 28-0 triumph over fourth-ranked and previously unbeaten Rhode Island. The win was the Spiders(2-5, 2-3 Atlantic 10) seventh straight over the Rams. Cordell Roane ran for 111 yards and threw two touchdown passes - the first scoring strikes for the Spiders' offense this season. Defensively, UR held Rhode Island to just 92 total yards in recording its' first shutout in 52 games.
The Spiders' first TD pass of the season came late in the second quarter on a 42-yarder from Roane to Mike Millard - the senior tight end's first catch of the year. Roane's second TD pass was for five yards to Boyd Ouden with 2:14 left in the third.
No. 4 Rhode Island (7-1, 5-1 Atlantic 10) entered the game leading the Atlantic 10 conference with average rushing of 281 yards a game. The Rams were held to 92 yards total offense, compared to Richmond's 365 yards.
Rhode Island lost its chance to tie the school's record for consecutive wins.
Richmond's first TD was set up following a Vince Nedimyer fumble at the Rams' 6-yard line, recovered by Jonathan Wilfong. Kenny Dantzler ran it in for four yards, giving Richmond a 7-0 lead in the first.
The final score of the game was a 2-yard run by J.R. Purnell with 10:54 left.
Richmond's defense held the Rams to 92 yards on offense, five first downs and had four sacks. In the past three games, UR's defense A-10 leading defense has allowed just 17 points and only 461 total yards.
The Spiders, playing just their second home game of the season, will return to UR Stadium next Saturday to host the new first place team in the league, Hofstra. Kickoff is Noon and the game will be televised by the Madison Square Garden Network.
