UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Two University of Richmond men's tennis players earned weekly honors from the Atlantic 10 conference for their performances in this past weekend's East Coast Collegiate Championships hosted by Old Dominion University. The conference selected sophomore Jeremy Howard (Dartmouth, Mass./Moses Brown School) as the conference player of the week and freshman Derek Schwandt (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) as the co-rookie of the week.
Howard was a perfect 4-0 in singles action over the weekend as he captured the Flight D singles championship. Along the way, he knocked off two players from both Virginia and James Madison, including Clint Morse (JMU) in the finals by a score of 6-2, 6-1. In doubles play, Howard teamed with freshman Jeppy Moss (Fredericksburg, Va./Woodberry Forest School) to post a record of 2-1 as the tandem defeated Radford and Virginia. Howard has an overall record this fall of 7-2 (5-1 singles, 2-1 doubles).
Schwandt, who earlier this season garnered both player and rookie of the week honors (Sept. 9), had a combined record of 6-1 at the tournament. In singles competition, Schwandt was 3-1 as he defeated two players from Virginia and one from George Mason, before falling to the eventual Flight B champion in the semifinals. He combined with junior Dan Scrafford (Centreville, Va./Centreville) to win the Flight C doubles championship as the duo went 3-0, defeating Virginia twice and George Mason once. Thus far, Schwandt is 10-3 this fall (5-2 singles, 5-1 doubles).
The Richmond men's tennis team returns to action October 19-21 as the Spiders travel to Columbia, S.C. to participate in the South Carolina Fall Invitational.
